A handbrake lever assembly (110) includes a lever (112) pivoted to a bracket (114) for movement between brake-off and brake-on positions, and a lock mechanism (120) releasably holding the handbrake on. An electronic actuator (154) is provided to release the lock mechanism, which comprises a pawl (128) and ratchet teeth (134). A control circuit (160, Fig. 6) for the electronic actuator includes a switch (123) actuated by a release button (122) located at the free end of the lever. The switch may be a micro-switch or a Hall Effect switch. Hand grip (118) may be offset vertically, laterally, or at an angle to longitudinal members (142, 144) of the lever (112). A storage compartment (215) may be provided between the members (142, 144). The handbrake lever (112) must be lifted before releasing the handbrake, to avoid accidental release. Handbrake release may also be dependent on "ignition on" status.
