The present invention provides a cell tray (100) suitable for accommodating bottles of at least two different sizes. The novel cell tray (100) has a quadrilateral base (70) which has on one side a loading surface (71) adapted to receive bottle bottoms in a matrix-like loading pattern. The cell tray also includes holding devices (72) on the opposite side to the loading surface (71) such that the holding devices (72) are adapted to receive and lock into place bottle mouths of bottles loaded onto a similar cell tray (100) beneath said holding devices (72) in a stack of cell trays (100). The holding devices (72) are arranged as to align with at least two separate loading patterns (LP 1 , LP 2 ). The loading surface (71) comprises protruding ridges (73) which have a shape inverse to that of a combination of the first and second loading patterns (LP1, LP2).

The center side columns (22a) and the corner columns (24) having outer ledges (30a,32) defining a nesting height of the tray (10), such that the side walls (28) of a similar tray (10') nested thereon would contact and rest on the outer ledges (30a,32) of the center side columns (22a) and the corner columns (24). According to another, independent feature of the present invention, the noncenter side columns (22b) are offset inwardly relative to adjacent columns (24,22a). This accommodates the handle (49) of the tray (10) in a ninety-degree cross-stacked configuration. As another optional feature, end columns (26) are offset inwardly relative to adjacent corner columns (24) in order to accommodate the handle (49) of a similar tray (10') nested thereon.

The wall and handle structure assembly includes a lower wall member which has a single-wall thickness and defines at least one of the first pair of opposed side walls. The assembly also includes a handle structure (50) which has an outer handle member (58) and an inner handle member (52). The outer handle member (58) is disposed in the lower wall member, and the inner handle member extends into the compartment and is attached to the outer handle member to define a finger receiving area (60) therebetween. The outer handle member (58) further has a lower surface (66), wherein the lower wall member, the lower surface of the outer handle member (66), and the bottom portion (20) define a hand-opening area (68) which extends into the compartment to allow for handling the crate.
