There is disclosed a refuse handling apparatus in a refuse collection vehicle particularly adapted for recyclable refuse including at least two separate compartments for receiving a different type of refuse such as selected recyclable materials, each compartment being fitted with a compactor device adapted to a system filling the compartments in which the compactor device (12, 13) includes a pair of reciprocating paddles (12, 13) mounted for arcuate movement about a drive shaft, the paddles including sensing means for sensing the compaction of refuse material in the compartments. A different compaction force is applied to each compartment. At least one of the compartments including rake device (14, 15) mounted for reciprocal movement in the compartment to apply force to the refuse in a single direction away from the loading area. The refuse collection vehicle includes adjacent the discharge end of the container an overload area (17) into which excess refuse material can be selectively transferred from either of the compartments (for example, via pivoting flaps (18, 19)).

The invention relates to a method for the destruction of data carriers, said method preventing access to the process of rendering confidential data carriers (4), which consist of paper or similar, illegible and allowing said carriers to be destroyed. In said method confidential data carriers (4) are collected at the point of origin (A) in secure collection containers (1), are removed by means of a collection vehicle (2) and are supplied to a paper recycling plant (3) in a final step. The object of the invention is to prevent access to the data carriers (4), to introduce a destruction step during the collection of the documents whilst preserving the possibility of supplying the destroyed documents to the paper recycling process and to remove the need for additional treatment in shredder equipment. To achieve this, the interior (201) of a mobile pulper (20), which is connected to the collection vehicle (2), is filled with the confidential data carriers (4), said carriers are mixed with a pulping fluid and the mixture is blended by an agitator device (202) to form a suspension of defibrated documents and pulping fluid, a hydromechanical pulping process taking place in the pulper (20) before the suspension is supplied to the paper recycling plant (3).

Um für eine effektive Komprimierung des Schüttgutes zu sorgen, ist erfindungsgemäß vorgesehen, daß der maximale Querschnitt des Preßorgans (3) höchstens 50% des freien Querschnittes des Behälters (2) beträgt und daß das Preßorgan (3) und der Behälter (2) in einer im wesentlichen horizontal angeordneten x,y-Ebene sowohl in x-Richtung als auch in y-Richtung relativ zueinander verlagerbar sind. In Weiterbildung ist die Vorrichtung mit einer gegebenenfalls gleichfalls bezüglich des Behälters (2) verlagerbaren Zuführeinrichtung für das Schüttgut ausgestattet. A debris hopper is mounted on the pre-built conventional truck chassis. A debris loading apparatus is operatively mounted on the pre-built conventional truck chassis and is connected in debris depositing relation to the debris hopper.
