When the sheet bunch pushing member 50 is moved along the guide rail 41, the sheet bunch pushing member 50 can be moved in a direction in which the engagement with the guide hole 28 is released.

At the time of interconnection, a third conveying portion 5D (junction conveying means) for conveying the sheet 2 from a main sorter unit S1 to a slave sorter unit S2 is used also as the first conveying portion 5A. A sheet sorting apparatus for depositing a sheet (5) from a printer in one of a plurality of output trays (12, 13, 14). The apparatus has a pair of rollers (112A, 112B) that moves the sheet (5), leading edge first, out of the printer. As the sheet exits the rollers (112A, 112B), it encounters a deflector (110). Depending on the position of the deflector (110), the sheet (5) either moves into a first output tray (12) or to a flipper assembly (11). The flipper assembly (11) inverts the sheet (5) so that trailing edge of the sheet (5) exits the flipper assembly (11) before the leading edge of a sheet (5). A continuous belt (115) removes the sheet (5) from the flipper assembly (11) trailing edge first. Finally, a distribution head (30), which is movable along the continuous belt (115), is positioned adjacent to the one of a plurality of output trays (13, 14) prior to the arrival of the sheet (5). The distribution head (30) then removes the sheet (5) from the belt (115) and directs it to the output tray (13, 14).
