摘要:
There is described a method of processing a substrate web (W) into individual sheets (S) for the production of security documents, such as banknotes, the method comprising the following steps: a) providing a substrate web (W) ; b) inspecting the substrate web (W) to check a quality thereof; c) cutting the substrate web (W) into individual sheets (S) ; d) sorting the individual sheets (S) in dependence of results of the inspection at step b) to produce at least two types of sorted sheets (S A , S B , S C ), including good sheets (S A ) meeting desired quality requirements and bad sheets (S B , S C ) that are found to exhibit defects ; and e) processing at least the good sheets (S A ), and preferably also the bad sheets (S B , S C ), into individual stacks or reams (R, R W ) each consisting of a predetermined number of individual sheets. Also described is an installation for carrying out this method.

This invention provides a system and method for aligning, feeding, trimming, slitting, rotating, cross-slitting and stacking sheets, each containing one or more discrete page images thereon that allows for greater automation of the overall process so that reduced or no manual intervention is required to generate completed book stacks or "blocks" from a stream or stack of printed sheets. Sheets are fed to a first, upstream trimming station (720) to remove margin edges and optionally separate the sheets relative to the discrete page images. The sheets are then rotated 90 degrees and fed to a second, downstream trimming station (3770, 4880, 4910) that trims the right-angle edges and optionally separates the sheets into a final group of full-bleed pages, removing margins and gutter strips.; The sheets are fed to a stacking assembly (780, 3790) to be stacked in page order and any rejected, defective sheets or stacks are removed from the order.

A booklet making method is disclosed whereby printed sheets in forming booklets are evenly set in position and their jam in transport is reduced and whereby booklets having an odd number of leaves or pages are formed without waste of paper. The booklet making method is provided in which a continuous sheet of paper on one side 20a and a continuous sheet of paper on other side 20b parted by cutting from a web of paper are bonded together with a setting paste 40a and a throwaway paste 41a alternately at their widthwise other and one sides edges to form a double set continuous sheet of paper 50. The double set continuous sheet of paper 50 is cut into split double sheets 60 of a selected longitudinal length. A plurality of such split double sheets are integrally bound with an integrating paste 42a to form a booklet-like product 70. Portions of the booklet-like product 70 which are pasted and bonded with the throwaway paste 41a are cut off to provide a plurality of booklets 80. Thereby the booklets having an odd number of leaves or pages are formed without waste of paper.

A process for the production of books (22) with digital printing on a continuous paper strip (23), in which the strip defines book sections in sequence, with signature groups (33), each formed with basic sheets (34). The process employs a manufacturing system (21) which includes a transversal cutting equipment (41) for separating signature groups (33) as signatures sheets, and transversal and longitudinal folding equipment (46, 47) for the formation of respective signatures (48). For a book with at least a sheet section devoid of text and/or figures in a last signature group, the method provides: a) identify a reduced signature group (59) including a number of sheet sections having at least a page with text and/or figures; b) cut the paper strip (23) to separate the reduced signature group as reduced signature group; c) actuate the transversal folding equipment (46) limited to the sheet sections having at least a page with text and/or figures and skipping the actuation of the transversal folding equipment (46) for a single sheet section; and d) actuate the longitudinal folding equipment (47) for folding longitudinally the reduced signature group.

A post-processing device includes a processing tray (15) on which sheets are to be stacked, a transport portion (11) for transporting, a sheet introduced through an introduction port (12), a turn-aside portion (14) for turning aside the sheet to delay arrival of the sheet at the processing tray, and a delivery mechanism (16) for delivering the sheets stacked on the processing tray to a delivery tray (17) on a boundary between copies. When a remaining number of sheets of one copy unstacked on the processing tray exceeds a maximum number of stacked sheets that is an amount of sheets stackable on the processing tray, the delivery mechanism delivers a one copy a plurality of times so as to avoid delivery of only one sheet on a last page of the one copy, and the turn-aside portion turns aside a sheet on a first page to be stacked on the processing tray after delivering the sheet bundle.
