The invention relates to an elevator system (100) comprising an elevator cabin (5), two vertical lateral guide structures (10), two counterweights (18) which can be moved along the guide structures (10) and a drive mechanism of its own. The elevator cabin (5) is connected to the counterweights (18) by load-bearing means (19). Flat drives (6) serve as drive mechanisms. The flat drives (6) are fixed to mutually opposite cabin sides (5.1, 5.2) of the elevator cabin (5), each flat drive (6) comprising a gear rim (7) which engages into complementary toothings (25) provided on the guide structures (10). A rotational movement of the gear rim (7) is thus converted into a vertical movement of the elevator cabin (5).

The elevator of the invention comprises a set of hoisting ropes, an elevator car suspended by the set of hoisting ropes and possibly a counterweight suspended by the set of hoisting ropes. The hoisting ropes are received by pair of rope pulleys, and they have been arranged to run from a first rope pulley of the pair of rope pulleys to a second rope pulley of the pair of rope pulleys. The rope pulleys are rotatably mounted with bearings on the mounting frame (23), which comprises at least one first connecting part (24), by means of which the rope pulley is secured to a mounting support on the elevator car or counterweight. The present invention provides a rope climbing elevator system (30) comprising: an elevator car (110); host upper diverter pulleys (120a, 120b); a tensioner (160); host lower diverter pulleys (150a, 150b); ropes (130a, 130b); and a counter-rotating paired drive pulley (141). A ratio of linear speed of the first drive pulley (141a) and the second drive pulley (141b) to movement speed of the car (110) is about X:1 in the climbing process, wherein X is larger than or equal to 2. The elevator system (30) can achieve a ratio of a linear rotation speed of a drive motor to a movement speed of an elevator car, larger than or equal to about 2:1, can lower the torque requirement for the drive motor, decrease the weight of the drive motor, and reduce the cost of the drive motor.
