The invention relates to a filling system for filling bottles or similar containers (2) with a liquid filling material, said system comprising at least one filling element (3), a liquid channel (8) formed in a housing (7) of the filling element and connected to a tank (10) for providing the liquid filling material, and at least one outlet (11) for dispensing the liquid filling material into the respective container attached to the filling element. Said filling system also comprises a liquid valve (13) in the liquid channel, a gas return tube (20) that projects past the at least one outlet on one end, for controlling the level of the filling material in the filled container, and is connected to a gas chamber (10.2), formed for example in the tank, by means of a fluid connection (22). The filling system also comprises an open fluid channel (14, 16, 17) inside the filling element, in the region of the outlet. Said channel can be connected to a ring channel (19) guiding a gaseous and/or vaporous fluid under pressure, preferably an inert gas under pressure, and controlled by at least one first control valve (18).

The invention concerns a method for filling a plastic container (8) while it is still hot and deformable without damaging it, when the filling comprises a phase (17; 13) during which a noticeable difference in pressure between the container inside and the environment external to the filling installation occurs, at least during part of said phase, consisting in placing the container in a sealed chamber (9) isolating it from the external environment and modifying (18; 12) the pressure inside the chamber to reduce, even cancel, the difference in pressure between the container inside and outside. The invention is applicable to the filling of plastic containers, with aerated beverages and/or their filling after a vacuumizing phase of their internal volume, immediately after they have been made by blowing.
