The invention concerns a Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) a method of its production and a supercontinuum light source comprising such PCF. The PCF has a longitudinal axis and comprises a core extending along the length of said longitudinal axis and a cladding region surrounding the core. At least the cladding region comprises a plurality of microstructures in the form of inclusions extending along the longitudinal axis of the PCF in at least a microstructured length section. In at least a degradation resistant length section of the microstructured length section the PCF comprises hydrogen and/or deuterium. In at least the degradation resistant length section the PCF further comprises a main coating surrounding the cladding region, which main coating is hermetic for the hydrogen and/or deuterium at a temperature below Th, wherein Th is at least about 50° C., preferably 50° C.

Disclosed is a small bending radius single-mode optical fiber with compatibility, which relates to the field of single-mode optical fibers. The optical fiber comprises a core gradient layer, a germanium-doped core layer, a first transition layer, a first wrapping layer, a second transition layer, a second wrapping layer, a third transition layer and a third wrapping layer, said layers being arranged concentrically from the inner to the outer. The difference of relative index of refraction of the core gradient layer is ”n1, which is realized through an equation: ”n1 = a 1 (x 1 + x 1 2 + x 1 3 ) + b 1 ; the difference of relative index of refraction of the first transition layer is ”n3, which is realized through an equation: ”n3 = b 3 (1 - a 3 x 3 2 ) 0.5 ; the difference of relative index of refraction of the second transition layer is ”n5, which is realized through an equation: ”n5 = a 5 x 5 2 + b 5 ; the difference of relative index of refraction of the third transition layer is ”n7, which is realized through an equation: ”n7 = a 7 x 7 2 + b 7 . The small bending radius single-mode optical fiber with compatibility achieves a quite strong resistance to bending, the radius of which is below 2mm, and is well compatible with conventional single-mode optical fibers.

The invention relates to an optical fiber comprising an outer optical cladding and an optical core. The optical core comprises, from the center towards the periphery: a central core having a radius and a refractive index difference with respect to the outer optical cladding; and a depressed inner cladding. The depressed inner cladding includes at least a first portion having a radius and a refractive index difference with respect to the outer optical cladding, the first portion preferably being adjacent to the central core; a second portion adjacent to the first portion constituting a depressed trench having a radius, and a refractive index difference with respect to the outer optical cladding. The first portion of the inner cladding has a refractive index below the refractive index of the outer optical cladding, and the depressed trench - i.e. the second portion - has a refractive index that is lower than - i.e. more negative than - the refractive index of the first portion of the depressed inner cladding. The outer radius of the depressed inner cladding of the optical fiber is between 28 µm and 40 µm, the LP01 mode leakage losses at a wavelength of 1550 nm are less than 0.01 dB/km and the cable cut-off wavelength is less than 1530 nm.

The fiber has a ratio of the volume of the core over the width of the ring (W ring ) comprised between 0.12µm and 0.2µm and the outer depressed cladding has a volume comprised between 15 µm 2 and 30 µm 2 . A low cost preform with increased capacity can be obtained.
