Process for baking gypsum under superheated steam conditions consisting in stirring the charge in a rotary horizontal cylindrical oven and independently adjusting oven chamber pressure and temperature according to the temperature of the gypsum, the ambient temperature and pressure in said chamber and the charge's mass. The baking process according to the invention provides a high quality beta semihydrate-type plaster with a treatment cycle of less than one hour, and also provides all types of plasters, especially a blend of beta semihydrate and anhydrite II. The oven for carrying out said process includes means for sealing off its ends so that treatment can be carried out under controlled pressure. It also includes at its outlet, a sealed housing (19) with facilities (43) for receiving temperature and pressure sensors and especially a pyrometer (42) inserted into the central part of the oven to monitor the charge's temperature. At the same time that they monitor temperature and pressure, the sensors (13) indicate the evolution of the mass of the charge to be treated. A computer analyzes and processes all this data, adjusting oven chamber pressure and temperature as required, especially according to the type of plaster desired.

Der Heißgaserzeuger (4) ist dabei ein Heizbrenner (16) mit über eine Steuerungseinheit (20) einstellbarem Verbrennungsluftverhältnis. An apparatus for calcining gypsum including a housing having a bottom wall, opentop, and a plurality of side walls extending therebetween. A fixture is located adjacent the open top for receiving gypsum from a source and transferring the gypsum into the housing. At least one burner is connected to the housing and operable for combusting an air-fuel mixture to heat the gypsum. At least one serpentine burner conduit extends from the burner through the housing and terminates through a support floor of the apparatus. The exhaust flow is then directed through a fluidization pad and into the gypsum to further heat the gypsum product. An agitation mechanism is operable to mix the gypsum adjacent the fluidization pad to prevent pockets of gypsum from coagulating and preventing fluidization of the gypsum.

Disclosed is a method and system for calcining gypsum to recover gypsum in a form consisting essentially of calcium sulfate anhydrite is disclosed. The method includes the steps of feeding the ground gypsum material (20) by way of a conveyor (18) into a first kettle (11) and heating the ground gypsum to a temperature preferably below 400 °F. The ground gypsum is then overflowed through an overflowed through an overflow tube (26) into a second kettle (12) and heated to a temperature of between 500 to 800 degrees F. The ground gypsum is then overflowed through an overflow tube (26) into a second kettle (12) and heated to a temperature of between 500 to 800 degrees F. The ground gypsum is then overflowed through through another overflow tube (27) into a third kettle (13) and heated to a final temperature of at least 900 degrees F to produce an anhydrite product.

A method for processing a pulverulent calcium sulphate material in order to obtain a hydraulic binder is described, including combining the following two successive processing steps: (a) heating the pulverulent material in a curing tunnel (1) at a temperature of 220-360 °C, under conditions suitable for primarily forming an α-type calcium sulphate, and (b) subjecting the heated material to a thermal quenching step in a cooling apparatus (2), with a cold, dry gas to stabilise the α anhydrite and to prevent its conversion into other crystallographic types. The method provides a novel hydraulic binder with an α anhydrite content of more than 35 wt.%, and with improved strength and behaviour in fire resistance properties.

The invention provides a vacuum dehydrating system for gypsum slurry, comprising a vacuum dehydrating apparatus, a first water supply apparatus for supplying filter cake washing water to the vacuum dehydrating apparatus, and a water heating apparatus for heating the filter cake washing water. The invention also provides a vacuum dehydrating method, comprising the following steps: 1) heating the filter cake washing water by the water heating apparatus; 2) supplying the heated filter cake washing water to a vacuum dehydrating apparatus during dehydrating the gypsum slurry by the vacuum dehydrating apparatus. In the invention, the filter cake washing water is heated. Due to the higher temperature of filter cake washing water, the dehydration rate of gypsum slurry is improved so that water content of gypsum filter cake after dehydration is decreased.
