Methods of obtaining a solution of calcium ions from lime (e.g. carbide lime) are disclosed. In one aspect the method comprises (i) treating the lime with an aqueous solution of a polyhydroxy compound (preferably sorbitol) having three or more hydroxy groups and a straight chain of 3 to 8 carbon atoms; and (ii) optionally separating insoluble impurities from the solution resulting from (i). In another aspect the method comprises (iii) treating carbide lime with an aqueous solution of a polyhydroxy compound (e.g. sorbitol or sucrose) to extract calcium from the carbide lime; and (iv) separating insoluble impurities from the solution resulting from (i). The solutions obtained may be treated with precipitating agent to obtain a solid calcium containing product. The product may be calcium carbonate obtained by treating the solution with carbon dioxide as the precipitating agent.

A process for hydrating CaO residues in fluidised bed combustor ashes that both achieves a better level of hydration, which does not add significantly to the cost of the hydration process, which reduces the consumption of water in the hydration process, and which if desired can trap at least some of the CO2 in the furnace gasses, by using some of it to convert the hydrated CaO to CaCO3. This both reduces the amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere, and converts the potentially dangerous CaO in the ashes into an effectively inert and benign material. The hydration reaction between the solid CaO containing ashes and water is activated sonochemically. By exposing the ash/water mixture to sound under the correct conditions of frequency, and power input it is possible to improve both the rate of hydration, and the level of hydration, of FBC ashes. The process can be carried out either batchwise or continuously, and does not require an extended time period.

A process for processing stainless steel slags, wherein these stainless steel slags are crushed to a particle size which is mainly smaller than about 60 mm at the most and wherein the crushed steel slags are processed further to produce a shape retaining mass containing the particles of the crushed steel slags in a bound state. The crushed steel slags are more particularly used for the production of asphalt. Due to the binding of the particles in this shape retaining mass, the problem of leaching, in particular of chromium, nickel and fluoride, is solved. Furthermore, it has been found that the crushed steel slags have a good cubicity and an equilibrated grain distribution for achieving asphalt with a high compression strength.

The invention relates to a method for the incineration under precisely defined conditions, of kaolin-containing material such as waste paper and other residues stemming from recycling of waste paper for reuse in the paper industry, yielding a material of puzzolanic properties. To this end the incineration takes place in a fludized bed at a temperature of preferably 780 DEG C wherein the same or a lower temperature prevails in the freeboard. Due to its hydraulic properties the puzzolanic material is suitable for the manufacture of concrete of a high compression strength. The invention also relates to a cement containing the puzzolanic material manufactured by the method of the invention.

Das zugeführte Schüttgut durchläuft nacheinander verschiedene, im wesentlichen räumlich getrennte Behandlungszonen (I, II, III), während des gesamten Durchlaufes mit einstellbarer Intensität mechanisch bewegt, in jeder Behandlungszone unterschiedlich behandelt, zur Reaktion gebracht und kontrolliert entlang einer Reaktionsstrecke transportiert wird.

L'invention est relative à une installation pour l'extinction à l'eau chaude des cendres volantes hydrauliques et produits équivalents, pour les convertir en liant hydraulique. Elle vise à assurer une récupération maximale de l'énergie thermique d'extinction, en vue d'éliminer les équipements annexes usuels, tels que chaudières et transporteurs, tout en préservant l'environnement. Cette installation comprend une série d'autoclaves (A,B,C,D) pourvus d'une alimentation en eau chaude (12, 12a, 13) et reliés chacun à un circuit fermé commun de vapeur d'eau (8, 8a, 8b) muni de moyens (9, 14, 15, 17) permettant la communication sélective, d'une part, de chacun des autoclaves avec ce circuit et, d'autre part, de ces autoclaves se trouvant à des stades différents du processus cyclique d'extinction entre eux, en vue de récupérer ainsi la chaleur et la vapeur dégagées lors de ce processus, chaque autoclave comportant un dispositif d'alimentation (3) en cendres volantes et un plongeur (19) pour l'évacuation des cendres éteintes sous l'action de la pression de la vapeur en provenance dudit circuit fermé.
