A clean-burning fuel with an upgraded mixture of hydrocarbons is produced by reacting methane-containing gas with crude oil or a liquid petroleum fraction in a process wherein the gas is fed to a reaction vessel to contact both the liquid and a metallic catalyst grid that is formed from windings of a transition metal supported on an iron frame immersed in a liquid petroleum fraction, at a moderate temperature to produce a gaseous reaction product which is condensed to form the fuel. The fuel has a variety of uses, including serving as an additive to crude oil for transport purposes.

Embodiments of processes for upgrading a petroleum-based composition while decreasing plugging comprise mixing a supercritical water stream with a pressurized, heated petroleum-based composition in a mixing device to create a combined feed stream, and introducing to a supercritical upgrading reactor system are provided. The processes also comprise cooling the upgraded product in a cooling device, and decreasing the pressure of the cooled upgraded product in a pressure reducer. To reduce plugging, the processes also comprises injecting plug remover solution into one or more of the following injection locations: an injection port on a process line connecting the mixing device with the upgrading reactor system; an injection port on a process line connecting the upgrading reactor system with the cooling device; or an injection port on a process line connecting the cooling device with the pressure reducer.

The invention relates to a method for producing a petrochemical product from biomass, involving the following steps: dewatering and drying biomass; producing crude oil by the direct liquefaction of the dried biomass; hydrogenating the crude oil into hydrocarbons; and refining the hydrocarbons into a petrochemical product. Said method is characterized in that the hydrogen used for hydrogenating the crude oil is obtained from the wastewater accumulated during the dewatering and drying of the biomass and/or during the direct liquefaction and from the residue accumulated during the direct liquefaction.

During the hydrotreating process, hydrogen sulfide and short chain hydrocarbons such as methane, ethane, propane, butane and pentane are formed. The separation of gas from hydrotreated liquid hydrocarbons is achieved using a stripper and a flash drum. High pressure steam or nitrogen is contacted with the hydrotreated liquid hydrocarbon material. This high pressure steam strips the volatiles, i.e., hydrogen, the volatile hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide, and the like, from the oil. The gaseous streams is then separated and cooled to remove condensables, including primarily water, short chain hydrocarbons, and hydrogen sulfide in the water. The condensables are advantageously sent to the gasifier, where the hydrocarbons are gasified, the water moderates the gasifier temperature and increases the yield of hydrogen, and where hydrogen sulfide is routed with the produced synthesis gas to the acid gas removal process.
