The present disclosure provides a method for inhibiting corrosion on internal metal surfaces of an overhead condenser of a crude distillation unit in which hydrocarbons, water and amine hydrochlorides condense, the method comprising adding to the overhead condenser an amine composition in an amount and at a rate sufficient to maintain the pH of water condensate in the condenser above a pH of about 5, the amine composition consisting of a mixture of four amines wherein the amines are monoethanloamine, methoxypropyl amine, morpholine and cyclohexylamine present in a weight ratio ranging from about 25:30:25:20 to about 30:40:15:15. The present disclosure further provides a system and method to assess the corrosion rate and to optimize the dosage of neutralizing amine composition during the operating conditions of overhead condensing system.

The quaternary ammonium compound described by general formula 1 below (wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different hydrocarbon radicals with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and n is an integer between 1 and 10) is used as a metal corrosion inhibitor. With this metal corrosion inhibitor, it is possible even with the addition of small quantities to adequately prevent corrosion of metal in a steam generating unit or petroleum refining or petrochemical process unit. Moreover, (&bgr;-hydroxyethyl)trimethylammonium hydroxide is used as a hydrogen chloride formation inhibitor for a crude oil atmospheric distillation unit. With this hydrogen chloride formation inhibitor, it is possible to prevent the formation of hydrogen chloride itself in a crude oil atmospheric distillation unit without having any adverse effect on the catalyst.

A process for adding at least a neutralizing amine having a pKa of between 5 and 8 to a petroleum refinery distillation unit for the purpose of preventing the formation of fouling deposits on metallic surfaces. The use of these amines raises the dew point pH sufficiently to prevent corrosion of the metallic surfaces of the overhead equipment while reducing the potential for the precipitation of amine salts.

There are disclosed methods and compositions for neutralizing acidic components in petroleum refining units. The neutralizing agent comprises a member selected from the group of dimethylaminoethanol and dimethylisopropanolamine. The neutralizing agent may be added directly to the charge, in a reflux line, or directly to the overhead line of the refining unit. In those instances in which sour crude is to be refined, it is desirable that dimethylisopropanolamine be used in conjunction with the dimethylaminoethanol. The neutralizing agents are preferably added in an amount sufficient to elevate the pH of the condensate (as measured at the accumulator) to within the pH range of 4.5-7.
