The present invention relates to a composition and a method for treating substrates, such as fabrics; particularly to make the substrate stain repellent and easier to clean upon the subsequent wash. The invention has been developed primarily for use on fabrics, and will be described hereinafter with reference to these applications. It is an object of the present invention to provide stain repellence to a fabric. It is still another object of the invention to provide a composition that provides improved perfume delivery to the fabric. It has been found that improved perfume delivery is obtained in compositions comprising a fatty acid, a water soluble salt of Aluminium and a non-ionic polymer. Improved stain repellence is obtained when the HLB of the polymer is between 12 and 18.

The invention relates to aerated soap bars. Generally, it is difficult to get aerated soap bars with the right level of aeration, because high viscosity of the molten soap mass sometimes makes it difficult to aerate it to the desired extent. The size and movement of air bubbles also play important roles. Bars with larger air bubbles have lower mechanical strength. We have determined that use of acrylates or cellulose ethers in aerated soap bars lead to bars with acceptable rate of wear, mush and lower density. The soaps also have a higher and more uniform air incorporation and better air retention. Disclosed are aerated soap bars having density from 0.2 to 0.99 g/cm 3 , comprising: (i) 20 to 80 wt% soap; (ii) 2 to 40 wt% polyol; (iii) 5 to 50% water; and, (iv) 0.5 to 5 wt% electrolyte; wherein the bars comprise 0.1 to 5wt% polymer selected from acrylates or cellulose ethers.

The invention relates to novel bar compositions comprising: (a) 40 to 80% by wt. fatty acid soap, wherein the level of soap exceeds the level of synthetic surfactant, if any; (b) 0 to 30% structurant; (c) 5 to 20% water,- wherein 8 to 60% of the bar comprises a complex formed from the interaction of soluble soap and multivalent ion; wherein the composition comprises less than 2% builder; and wherein the composition is substantially enzyme free. The insoluble complexes permit greater solid contents which counter intuitively, enhance lather (i.e., even if soluble soap is complexed, it is believed more can be used) . Further, the complexes enhance rate of wear, hardness, mildness and deposition. The invention further comprises process for enhancing benefits by adding multivalent ions to soap stock during processing.

Cleansing bar compositions having high water content comprise: (a) at least about 15%, by weight of the composition, of water; (b) from about 40% to about 84%, by weight of the composition, of soap; (c) from about 1% to about 15%, by weight of the composition, of inorganic salt; and (d) at least about 1%, by weight of the composition, of humectant. The bar compositions further comprise a component selected from the group consisting of carbohydrate structurant, free fatty acid, synthetic surfactants, and mixtures thereof. The bar compositions preferably have a Water Activity ('Aw') of less than about 0.95, preferably less than about 0.90, and more preferably less than about 0.85. The bar compositions are preferably manufactured by a milling process.

A soap composition containing in the range from 60 to 99 % by weight of the composition of a mixture of (i) 20 to 80 % by weight of alkali metal soap of straight chain C8-C24 fatty acids, and (ii) 20 to 80 % by weight of alkali metal soap of branched C8-C24 fatty acids, both based on the total weight of alkali metal soaps in the composition. The soap composition exhibits colour and odour stability without the requirement to include any additional stabilizers, preservatives or chelating agents normally present in soap.

A low or zero phosphate laundry detergent composition is based on a particulate partially neutralized (25-60 mole%) fatty acid mixture, of which up to 35% may be unsaturated. Preferably, the partially neutralized fatty acid base material is present as spray-cooled prills. A particulate solid base, for example sodium carbonate or sodium alkaline silicate, is also present. Non-soap surfactants and other conventional detergent ingredients may be included. The compositions are free-flowing and have excellent powder properties as well as good washing performance.
