A method and ionic liquid for the electrorecovery of metal from a metal salt including at least one metal ion. The method includes the steps of dissolving the metal salt in an ionic liquid, the ionic liquid including an ionic liquid cation and an ionic liquid anion; whereby the metal ion of the metal salt forms a metal complex in solution with at least the ionic liquid cation; and subjecting the metal complex to an electrical potential between a cathode and anode to recover metal at the cathode. The ionic liquid includes an ionic liquid cation and an ionic liquid anion, wherein the ionic liquid cation has an affinity for the metal ion which is at least about equal to that of the ionic liquid anion for the metal ion.

There are provided processes for preparing alumina. These processes can comprise leaching an aluminum-containing material with HCl so as to obtain a leachate comprising aluminum ions and a solid, and separating said solid from said leachate; reacting said leachate with HCl so as to obtain a liquid and a precipitate comprising said aluminum ions in the form of AlCl 3 , and separating said precipitate from said liquid; and heating said precipitate under conditions effective for converting AlCl 3 into Al 2 O 3 and optionally recovering gaseous HCl so-produced. These processes can also be used for preparing various other products such as hematite, MgO, silica and oxides of various metals, sulphates and chlorides of various metals, as well as rare earth elements, rare metals and aluminum.

A method is proposed for producing aluminium by metallothermic reduction of trichloride with magnesium in a stream of inert gas at a temperature of 900 - 1150°C, an overall pressure of 0.01 to 5 at and a mass ratio of aluminium chloride to magnesium in the starting mixture of 3.69 to 1.00. The process is carried out in a cylindrical reactor (1) with thin-walled ceramic packings (6) arranged on the inside and with a conical lower part (2), and a boiler-evaporator of the magnesium into the stream of inert gas is mounted upstream of the reactor, and an apparatus for separating liquid magnesium from the rest of the mixture thereof with aluminium chloride is mounted downstream of said reactor, wherein all of the components of the apparatus are lined inside with fireproof materials (5). The technical result is an increase in productivity by ensuring continuity of the reduction process, and excellent environmental characteristics.

The present invention relates to a method for removing residue of a metallic salt-containing ionic fluid from a work piece, comprising the step of (a) treating at least part of the work piece surface with a treatment agent containing a metallic salt-free ionic fluid and/or an organic solvent, wherein the organic solvent is optionally a halogenated hydrocarbon or a mixture of two or more such hydrocarbons. The residue of the metallic salt-containing ionic fluid on the work piece may originate from an electrolyte bath and is, for example, EMIMClx1.5 AlCl3 (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride containing aluminum chloride for the galvanic coating of metal work pieces with aluminum). After treating the work piece surface with an organic solvent (heptane, toluene, decalin, and the like), the lower phase located in the wash bath is returned from EMIMC1x1.5 AlCl3 to the electrolyte bath by phase separation.

The present invention relates to a stepwise method for the production of titanium-aluminium compounds and some titanium alloys and titanium-aluminium inter-metallic compounds and alloys. In a first step an amount of aluminium is mixed with an amount of aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and then an amount of titanium chloride (TiCl4) is added to the mixture. The mixture is heated to a temperature of less than 220 °C to form a product of TiCl3, aluminium and AlCl3. In a second step, more aluminium can be added if required, and the mixture heated again to a temperature above 900 °C to form titanium-aluminium compounds. This method results in the production of powdered forms of titanium-aluminium compounds with controllable composition. Suitable reactor apparatus is also described.

In the production of aluminum monochloride from alumina, bauxites, bauxitic clays and clays wherein the produced aluminum monochloride gas stream contains at least CO 2 and Cl 2 radical and this gas stream is initially passed through at least one bed of reducing agent selected from the group consisting of charcoal and devolatilized coke to convert the CO 2 to CO; subsequently the gas stream now containing at least AlCl, CO and Cl 2 radical is contacted with molten aluminum metal to convert the Cl 2 radical to AICI to produce a gas stream of which the major components are AlCl and CO substantially free of C0 2 and Cl 2 radical.
