In this method for producing a perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid salt, there is provided a method for producing a perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid salt with a low fluorine content, which is a simple method to achieve a high yield, wherein a solution is formed by adding, to at least one compound selected from perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid salts represented by a general formula RfSO 3 •M (wherein Rf represents a perfluoroalkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and M represents Li, Na or K), an organic solvent which is capable of dissolving the compound, and an adsorbent having a capacity to adsorb fluorine ions is added to the solution.

A process is disclosed for producing perfluoroolefins of the formula CF(R1f)=CF2, where R1f is F or CF3. The process involves (a) perfluorinating cyclobutanes of formula (I), where R2f is F or CF3, and where one R1 is H and the other R1 is H when R2f is F and is CH3 when R1f is CF3, by the Simons electrochemical fluorination process in an electrochemical cell in a solution of anhydrous liquid hydrogen fluoride under temperature and pressure conditions sufficient to replace all hydrogens in the cyclobutane of the above formula with fluorine; and (b) cracking the perfluorinated cyclobutane. A disclosed cracking involves contacting the perfluorinated cyclobutanes with carbon or a conductive metal, which is heated by induction heating to a temperature sufficient to crack the perfluorinated cyclobutanes.

A process for preparing inert or functional, tertiary carbon-containing perfluorochemicals comprises the step of electrochemically fluorinating, in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, a composition comprising at least one starting compound selected from the group consisting of those fluoroalkanes, fluoroalkenes, fluoroalcohols, fluorocarboxylic acids, fluorocarboxylic acid halides, fluorocarboxylic acid esters, and combinations thereof which contain at least one (preferably, only one) -CX2-C(Rf)2- group, wherein each X is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluorine, and CH2OH, with the proviso that only one X can be CH2OH, and each Rf group is independtly perfluoroalkyl. The process enables preservation of the highly-branched structure of the starting compounds resulting in high product yields.

An electrochemical fluorination process comprises passing by forced convection a liquid mixture comprising anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and fluorinatable organic compound, e.g., tripropyl amine, at a temperature and pressure at which a substantially continuous liquid phase is maintained, between the electrodes (15) of a bipolar electrode stack (16). The bipolar electrode stack comprises a plurality of substantially parallel, spaced-apart electrodes (15) made of an electrically-conductive material, e.g., nickel, which is essentially inert to anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and which, when used as an anode, is active for electrochemical fluorination, and the electrodes of the stack are arranged in either a series or a series-parallel electrical configuration. The bipolar electrode stack has an applied voltage difference which produces a direct current which can cause the production of fluorinated organic compound, e.g., perfluoro(tripropyl amine). An electrochemical fluorination cell (11) which can be used for carrying out the process is also described.
