Methods of manufacturing a nonwoven web having alcohol repellency properties are provided. A plurality of perfluoroalkyl(alkyl) (meth)acrylic monomers can first be deposited on a surface of the nonwoven web, and subsequently exposed to a RF plasma to polymerize the monomers on the surface of the nonwoven web to form a fluorinated polymeric coating. The perfluoroalkyl(alkyl) (meth)acrylic monomers include perfluoroalkyl(alkyl) (meth)acrylate esters having a perfluorinated carbon end group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms Nonwoven webs are also generally provided that have an alcohol repellency of greater than 80%.

The materials made of acrylic fibre thus obtained are characterized by a waterproofing degree higher than 25 cm of water column and have a rigid appearance or good draping and softness depending on whether they have been waterproofed with treatment (i) or (ii). These materials are used in the preparation of covers or sun shields.

A process is described for flame-proofing organic polymeric materials by means of a low temperature plasma treatment in the presence of at least one volatile, low-molecular compound. The process comprises subjecting a volatile compound, selected from a halogen-free phosphorus compound, to the low temperature plasma, such that a homogeneous polymeric structure forms on the organic material. A very wide range of organic materials can be effectively flame-proofed with the process of this invention without adversely affecting their other properties such as mechanical properties or photochemical stability.
