A method is provided for the use of borates in the recausticization of alkali-containing liquors such as those produced in the chemical and semi-chemical pulping of wood and in the oxidation and bleaching of wood pulp. Sodium hydroxide is regenerated from sodium carbonate-containing smelts in such pulp processes by autocausticization through the addition of limited amounts of borate. Autocausticization may be carried out at boron to carbonate molar ratios below 2:1 and at sodium to boron molar ratios exceeding 3:1, resulting in high reaction efficiency. Partial autocausticization using borate may also be combined with conventional lime recausticization for the regeneration of sodium hydroxide from sodium carbonate-containing smelts.

The present invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for treating the green liquor formed in a sulphate pulp mill, especially to a method of enhancing the clarification of the green filter. According to the invention, at least a portion of the green liquor stream of the mill is directed into a clarifier. Clarified green liquor is discharged from the clarifier while dregs-containing green liquor is discharged from the bottom of the clarifier. The dregs-containing green liquor is directed into a filter, in which it is filtered for forming a filtrate and a dregs. Dregs separated from the green liquor can be washed already in this step, thus lightening the load on the actual dregs filter. Filtrate, i.e. filtered green liquor, is directed for further treatment along with clarified green liquor. The connection according to the invention enables a portion of the stream of green liquor to be directed past the clarifier directly to the filter along with dregs-containing green liquor.

The present invention relates to a method of processing white liquor (3) obtained from the causticization step of a pulp mill, in which method the infeed white liquor (3) principally contains sodium hydroxide (6) and sodium sulfide (7). The method according to the invention is characterized in that the sodium hydroxide (6) contained in the white liquor (3) is separated from the white liquor (3) either entirely or partly by means of a diffusion dialysis process (4). The invention is further characterized in that the sodium hydroxide (6) separated from the white liquor (3) is advantageously entirely returned back to the chemical circulation of the pulp mill.
