The exterior region is thicker than the interior region and the boundary (155) between the two regions defines an abutment surface (156). The thickness and width of the interior region is dimensioned to allow the lifting link (1) to be connected to the head (120) of the insert and the thickness of the outer region is dimensioned so as to restrict the rotation of the lifting link when a load is applied normal to the axis of the insert, and to effectively transfer the load by a couple developed across the full cross- section of the insert e.g. when tilting the concrete element from a horizontal position to a vertical position.

A recess former (30) is disclosed for use with anchors (35) which are to be cast into a concrete slab (61). The recess former (30) preferably includes a removable plug (36) and preferably rectangular lugs (57) which engage with corresponding apertures in the attachment head (34) of the lifting anchor and prevent the ingress of cement during casting of the slab (61). In addition, flaps (51) are preferably provided on the recess former to prevent the sides of the attachment head (34) from being encased in the concrete. Preferably the former is pivoted between open and closed positions and has a slightly V-shaped base which when abutted against a mold or formwork, urges the recess former into the closed position. Furthermore, a recess former (60-60I) is disclosed which stays behind after the casting and remains embedded in the concrete in order to provide a waterproof membrane between the recess (62) and adjacent reinforcing rods (58, 59, 71) thereby preventing corrosion of the reinforcing rods.

A void former particularly for use with a lifting anchor cast into a concrete component is of two piece construction comprising a flexible element and a separate body which is substantially rigid. The flexible element is engageable with the head of the lifting anchor and is maintained in position by the rigid body which also acts to maintain the shape of the void during casting. After casting the rigid body is removed from the flexible element to thereby permit the flexible element to be disengaged from the lifting anchor by manipulation. The void former is thereby removable after casting without destruction of the void former and is thereby suitable for repeated use.

These engagement means can come into contact with securing means, resulting in a coupling of considerable strength between the concrete part and the said securing means. The engagement means may comprise a screw thread, bayonet-like structure or the like arranged in the concrete. However, it is also possible for the engagement means to be designed as a separate component which is placed into the concrete material. This separate component is then provided with the engagement means proper in that it is provided with a screw thread, bayonet catch or the like. In this way, it is possible to secure construction parts to the concrete part, to hoist the concrete part and to carry out further actions with this part. It is also possible to adjust the concrete part with the aid of adjustment bolts which engage in the engagement means.
