A coring tool comprises a core cutting section (10) and an actuating section (12) disposed thereabove. The core cutting section (10) includes axially telescoping outer and inner barrels. The inner barrel includes a jaw carrier which carries pivotable core-catching jaws normally covered along their radially inner sides by a driver sleeve. When the driver sleeve is raised by the actuator section the jaws are uncovered. Thereafter, the driver sleeve raises the jaw carrier to bring the jaws into contact with a stationary inclined jaw-deflecting surface to force the jaws laterally inwardly through the core. The actuator section relies upon fluid pressure to release for movement a vertically raisable member which transmits vertical forces to the driver sleeve from a drill string.

An automatically operable hydraulic lift inner barrel is deviced to lift the inner tube (22) of the core barrel on a drill string (10). An inner mandrel (88) is axially disposed within the outer tube (12) of the coring tool. An outer piston (106) which is selectively locked to the inner mandrel (88) is telescopically and concentrically disposed about the inner mandrel (88). Fluid is selectively diverted from the outer tube (12) into the inner mandrel (88) and inside the outer piston (106). An inner locking piston (90) within the inner mandrel (88) responds to the hydraulic pressure to unlock the outer piston (106) from the inner mandrel (88). The outer piston (106) is then longitudinally displaced by the hydraulic pressure thereby lifting the inner tube (22) which is connected to it. After the outer piston (106) has moved a predetermined distance, the hydraulic pressure supplied to the inner mandrel (88) and inside the outer piston (106) reaches a second predetermined magnitude. Burst disks (116) are then blown thereby relieving the hydraulic pressure within the outer piston (106) inner mandrel (88). The inner locking piston (90) reassumes its initial position thereby locking the inner mandrel (88) once again to the outer piston (106) which is now in an extended position. Therefore, an inner tube (22) within a coring tool can be selectively lifted, moved a predetermined longitudinal distance with respect to the outer tube (12), and then locked into position all in an automatic operation initiation by the initial diversion of hydraulic fluid to the inner mandrel (88) and outer piston (106).

The full closure catcher (42) is reliably actuated to assume a closed configuration without dependence upon gravity or an interference diametrical fit with the core by use of a cam ring (44) which is lonitudinally displaced downwardly within the core barrel (38) by a preloaded compression spring (46). The full closure core catcher is comprised of a plurality of flapper valves (40) circumferentially disposed outside of the inner tube (18) and concealed by the inner tube (18) or a terminal extension of the inner tube (18). Disposed above the plurality of flapper valves (40), and also circumferentially disposed outside of and concentric with the inner tube (18) is a cam ring (44). Similarly circumferentially disposed outside of and concentric with the inner tube is a preloaded coil compression spring (46) bearing against the cam ring (44). The cam ring (44) in turn is in sliding contact with a rear surface (43) of each one of the plurality of flapper valves (40). When the inner tube (18) is longitudinally displaced with respect to the flapper valves (40) to uncover the flapper valves (40), the flapper valves (40) are then rotated inwardly within the inner barrel (38) of the coring tool by virtue of the downward longitudinal drive of the cam ring (44) as powered by the preloaded compression spring (46).
