A parking brake actuating mechanisms (10) having first (11) and second (15) pivotally interconnected levers which act between brake shoes (14,18) so that pivoting (P) of the first lever relative to the second lever increases the effective length of the mechanism thus moving the associated brake shoes apart to engage the parking brake. The first lever includes an actuating cable abutment formation (31a) against which an actuating cable nipple (28) on a free end of a cable (27) is drawn to move the first lever (11) hence operating the mechanism. The first lever is also of hollow form defining a guide passage (29) through which the free end of the cable is directed from an aperture (24) in the backplate (23) of the associated brake to a location adjacent to the abutment formation (31a) to enable the nipple to be engaged with the formation. A leaf spring (40) is also provided to tend to maintain the cable nipple (28) in position for engagement with the abutment formation (31a) on the first lever (11).

The connecting device is formed of a U-shaped channel (20a) provided on a free end of the brake lever (20) and a guide unit (30) for automatically attaching the brake cable (14) to the free end of the brake lever when the brake cable is pushed toward the brake lever. The guide unit made separately from the brake lever includes a cable retaining groove (30c) bent into U-shape and attached to the channel of the brake lever, a guide member (30b) for leading the brake cable to the frontside edge surface of the cable retaining groove, and a ramped surface (30d) for deflecting the brake cable when the brake cable moves along the surface thereof for generating a return force in the brake cable. The brake cable snaps into the cable retaining groove by the return force when an end (14a) thereof passes the peak of the ramped surface.

A brake adjuster comprises a variable length strut (16) having two end portions (30, 31) and an intermediate portion (32) therebetween which is in screw threaded engagement with one of the end portions (31). A pawl (39) is attached to the other end portion (30) and engages an array of ratchet teeth (38) on the intermediate portion (32). As the end portions of the strut (30, 31) move apart during a brake application the pawl (39) rides up a flank of a ratchet tooth (38a) and if the movement apart exceeds a predetermined amount engages behind the tooth. When the end portions (30, 31) move towards each other in the next brake disengagement, the intermediate portion (32) is rotated relative to said one of the end portions (31) to increase the effective length of the strut (16). The pawl (39) may be bi-metallic and arranged to disengage the ratchet teeth (38) if the temperature of the adjuster rises above a predetermined level.

In the slot (28) there is a cable (40), a thickened end-piece (42) of which bears on the abutment (30) so that the lever (22) can be pivoted by tension (C) on the cable. The lever (22) has a projection (34) which is opposite the abutment (30) in the extension of the cable (40) to form a gap (32). The end-piece (43) lies in the gap (32) and is supported to transmit the thrust (D) of the cable on the projection (34). On the side of the projection away from the abutment (30) there is a ramp (38) on which the end-piece (42) of the cable (40) in the slot can be placed and from which the end-piece (42) slips into the gap (32) when tension (C) is exerted on the cable. This facilitates the assembly of the actuator, especially in a motor vehicle.
