The aim of the invention is to make such a monitoring device more secure against false alarms, in particular when a highly sensitive measuring sensor system is used. For this purpose, the invention proposes at least one force sensor (13) which is paired with the clamping device (10, 11) of the stuffing box (8) in order to monitor the pretension of the stuffing box (8), and the measured data from the pressure sensor (12) and the force sensor (13) are analyzed simultaneously by the expert system (14).

This is done in the invention by applying a predetermined maximum pressure for the initial compression of the stuffing box packing (20), by then varying the pressure (F) a number of times between the maximum and a predetermined minimum and finally compressing the packing under a predetermined rated pressure and clamping it in the chamber (12) in this condition. While the pressure (F) is being varied, the concomitant elongation (s) of the packing (20) is measured and recorded with the production of a force-elongation graph as a calibration curve. The rated pressure can then be set by compressing the packing using the calibration curve obtained by measuring the elongation.

The joint packing gland mechanism causes the axial loading on the joint packing (56) which forms a seal between the lance tube (14) and the feed tube (16) to be automatically adjusted upon each sootblower actuation cycle. The joint packing gland includes an actuator (76) which engages the sootblower frame (90) upon actuation of the sootblower causing relative rotation between the actuator (76) and lance tube (14). A friction clutch (78) is interposed between the actuator (76) and a threaded gland (68) to transmit rotation only when a packing preload force is below a predetermined level, thus adjusting packing force when needed.
