A piston for an internal combustion engine having an improved oil control ring is provided. The piston has a piston body providing an upper combustion surface and an annular outer wall depending therefrom. A ring belt region including a plurality of ring grooves is formed in the annular outer wall. A first compression ring is disposed in one of the ring grooves and the oil control ring is disposed in another of the ring grooves. The oil control ring has generally parallel, planar upper and lower surfaces, with the upper and lower surfaces having an annular groove recessed therein. A through opening can be formed to bring the annular grooves into fluid communication with one another. The annular grooves collect oil scraped from a cylinder wall and return oil to the crank sump and reduce the contact area between the oil control ring and the wall of the ring groove.

The invention relates to an oil scraper ring for pistons of internal combustion engines, said oil scraper ring comprising a disc (1) that is provided with parallel flanks and a bearing surface (h) having an asymmetrical crowned form with a vertex line (3) extending over the periphery of the disc. A bracing spring (4) arranged in a ring groove (7) of the piston and comprising a spring groove side (6) opposing the piston head and a spring groove side (5) facing the piston head presses the disc (1) radially against the cylinder wall (8). The aim of the invention is to achieve an improved oil scraping action compared to that of prior art, while reducing the friction and the abrasion of the bearing surface. To this end, at least one of the spring groove sides (5, 6) extends at an angle (ß) in relation to the piston axis (10) in such a way that it is radially outwardly inclined to the bracing spring end oriented towards the cylinder, the bearing surface (h) of the disc (1) being embodied in such a way that it corresponds to an almost worn end contour in the started engine state, and, when the oil scraper ring (1) is mounted in the piston, the vertex line (3) of the bearing surface (h) is oriented in the direction of the ring groove side (6) opposing the piston head.

This invention concerns a packing seal which is intended particularly for reciprocating piston engines and which, for example, can be placed in the groove (31) around the circumference of a piston (22) of a reciprocating engine. The packing seal comprises a first segment ring (1) which has at least two sealing segments (3) with locking segments (4) positioned between them in alternating order. These locking segments (4) and sealing segments (3) taper in opposing directions radially towards the inside and outside respectively in wedge-shaped form. Furthermore, the packing seal comprises at least one additional or second segment ring (20) which also has at least two sealing segments (23) with locking segments (24) positioned alternately between them. The sealing segments (23) and locking segments (24) both taper radially towards the inside. The locking segments (24) extend over a larger arc than the sealing segments (23). The sealing segments (23) of this second segment ring (20) overlay the locking segments (24) of the axially adjacent first segment ring (1) cited above. This additional segment ring (20) of the packing seal (10') is made and designed in such a way that its sealing segments (23) supported by a compressive force derived from the working pressure are reliably pressed against the seat to be sealed without any additional assistance. To prevent the sealing arrangement of the packing seal (10') from coming apart during operation due to rocking motion, a security device (40) is provided which borders a slot present in axial direction between the packing seal (10') and the groove (31) and diminishes this slot, preferably in dependence on the working pressure. This security device (40) can simultaneously diminish the radially-directed working pressure on the packing seal in the groove base (33).
