The hot solid particles (1) used to carry the coke can, in particular, form a second particle circulation loop in the fluidised bed, the first being that of the particles of the oxygen-transporting oxidation-reduction active mass (12) flowing between the oxidation and combustion reactors, thus allowing the coke-carrying particles (1) to be recycled in the method.

The present invention relates to a circulating fluidized bed reactor having substantially vertical walls with cooling elements therein, said vertical walls defining the interior of the reactor chamber (14). A separator (22) for separating particulate material from the exhaust gases is connected to the upper section of said reactor chamber. A return duct (26) is connected to the separator. A bubbling fluidized bed (28') is provided adjacent to the reactor and provided with heat exchanger means. A solids tight discharge channel (38) is provided between said bubbling fluidized bed chamber and said reactor chamber. The discharge channel has an opening in the upper section thereof for allowing particulate material to be discharged from the upper section thereof. The present invention relates also to a method of operating a circulating fluidized bed reactor with a discharge channel between a bubbling fluidized bed and the reactor chamber. Cooled particulate material is discharged from the lower section of said bubbling fluidized bed into the lower section of the discharge channel. The particulate material is fluidized in the discharge channel and introduced from the upper section thereof into the reactor chamber.

A method and apparatus are provided for operating a pressurized reactor system (1) in order to precisely control the temperature within a pressure vessel (3) in order to minimize condensation, and to prevent the temperature from reaching a detrimentally high level, while at the same time allowing quick heating during start-up. Gas is circulated from one part of the inside volume to another to control the temperature of the inside volume, for example by passing the gas through an exterior conduit (7) which has a heat exchanger (8), control valve (9), blower (10) and compressor (11) associated therewith, or by causing natural convection flow of circulating gas within one or more generally vertically extending gas passages, containing heat exchangers, flow rate control valves or the like, entirely within the combustion vessel. Preferably, inert gas is provided as circulating gas. The inert gas may also be used in emergency shut-down situations, when reaction gas supply to the reactor is cut off, and inert gas is introduced into the reactor.
