A damping mechanism is disclosed for use with a displacement measuring device, such as a load cell of the type immersed in a motion damping liquid contained within a housing. The mechanism includes a shear plate adjustably supported by the housing within the damping liquid for movement towards and away from a facing surface of the load cell, which is supported for movement within a plane disposed parallel to the shear plate, for purposes of controlling the thickness of the layer of damping liquid disposed therebetween. The thickness of the layer determines the damping characteristics of the mechanism.

The time spacing of the maxima of the measurements of the sequentially arranged load cell modules are preferably captured and placed in relation to the rise of the load curve.

Loads applied to the rigid members (24, 27, 30, 32) are measured by a strain gauge (33) mounted on the bending beam (20, 31, 41). Each force transmission element (13, 37, 38) comprises a rectangular prismatic body of elastomeric material, such as natural rubber, which may have concave sides (15) to reduce shear forces in the body. Fixing studs (17) may be attached to plates (16) bonded to the upper and lower surfaces of the body. The material of the body is chosen to exhibit creep, hystersis and linearity characteristics approximating those of an ideal spring.

Chaque élément de transmission de force (13, 37, 38) comprend un corps prismatique rectangulaire en matériau élastomère, tel qu'un caoutchouc naturel, pouvant avoir des côtés concaves (15) afin de réduire les forces de cisaillement se produisant dans ledit corps. On peut fixer des goujons filetés (17) de fixation aux plaques (16) montées sur les surfaces supérieure et inférieure dudit corps. On a choisi le matériau dudit corps pour qu'il présente des comportements au fluage, d'hystérésis et de linéarité proches de ceux d'un ressort idéal.
