The present method refers to the development of attachments to be incorporated inside the product bulk, such as food products, for the effective continuous detection and recording of temperature changes that denote faulty maintenance conditions during the storage of the product, its transport and distribution. Both detection and recording of specific temperature changes are effected with this method based on the change of shape of the so-called "Shape Memory Alloys" (SMA). The latter, change their shape in specific ways in response to temperature changes outside a predefined range, while when coated with other materials, such as plastic polymers or TiO 2 , they change their colour after their geometric state -e.g. contraction or dilation- has been transformed. Their cost is very low compared with the products that their safe maintenance is detected and recorded and no external power source is required, so that they can be directly attached to the product, closely monitoring its actual life-long maintenance temperatures.

The present invention relates to system (1) for detecting and localizing temperature variations comprising at least an optic fibre cable (2) placed within an area or along a path to be monitored for localization of temperature variations; and transceiving means (3, 4, 8), connected with said optic fibre cable (2), said transceiving means (3, 4, 8) injecting a reference optical signal within said optical fibre cable (2); characterised in that it comprises actuation means (6) suitable to interact with said at least one optic fibre cable (2), said actuation means (6), due to the increase of temperature of the surrounding environment beyond an activation thermal threshold, exerting a mechanical stress on said at least one optic fibre cable (2), realising a curvature on the same; and detection means (5, 8) for said reference signal connected with said transceiving means (3, 4, 8), said detection means (5, 8) measuring power of said reference optical signal. The present invention further relates to a method for detecting and localising temperature variations.

A sheeting includes a layer of a shape-memory polymer material having a surface of microlenses, wherein each of the microlenses is associated with one of a plurality of images within the sheeting. The layer of the shape-memory polymer material is responsive to an external stimulus; e.g., temperature, solvent, or moisture; by transitioning from a first state in which an optical property of the microlenses has a first value to a second state in which the optical property of the microlenses has a second value. The microlenses have refractive surfaces that transmit light to positions within the sheeting to produce a composite image from the images formed within the sheeting when the layer of the shape-memory polymer material is in one of the first state and the second state. At least one of the images is a partially complete image, and each of the images is associated with a different one of the microlenses.

A temperature alert device to warn of imminent devitrification due to warming of a biological specimen that uses shape memory materials. The temperature induced phase transformation of shape memory materials causes a temperature responsive actuator to extend an alert rod upon warming as the specimen temperature approaches the devitrification temperature (e.g. -130°C). The temperature alert device is automatically reset upon immersion in liquid nitrogen.
