Apparatus (10), for testing samples of friction material (31, 32) in rubbing contact with a surface (33) of a rubbing element (34), comprises a table (12) for supporting the rubbing element and a load cell (16) for sensing the load imposed by the frictionally coupled rotating samples from which the coefficient of friction can be determined. To make the tests repeatable rapidly and with identical starting conditions cooling means (40) is interposed between the rubbing element and table. Cooling means (40) comprises a fluid cooled heat exchanger (41), conveniently cooled by local main supply water supplied at its natural temperature, and thermoelectric cooling means (75). The thermoelectric cooling means consists of an array of planar peltier cooling elements which develops a temperature gradient there across which, with reference to the heat exchanger temperature, is able to cool and re-cool the rubbing element to temperatures as low as -25 °C within a matter of minutes. To ensure the friction material and rubbing element are not contaminated by water condensed from the atmosphere an enclosure (60) is formed around them and kept at positive pressure by dry, inert argon gas.

The invention is a system for measuring the braking force of a vehicle, whereby a wheel of a vehicle is supported by a pair of spaced rollers having axes that are generally parallel with the axis of the wheel. At least one of the rollers is driven at a constant speed by a circulatory hydraulic fluid system which includes a hydraulic motor. The energy expended by the hydraulic motor in maintaining a constant speed of the roller(s) is a function of the pressure of the hydraulic fluid on the inlet side of the hydraulic motor. This hydraulic fluid pressure is measured and recorded both before and after application of the vehicle's brakes.

A multi-platform system and a relative method for checking the braking ability of vehicles with at least two wheel axes, as well as a checking method of the suspensions employing such system is disclosed. The system comprises pairs of detection plates, aligned according to a motion direction on two parallel paths, apt to detect horizontal and vertical components of a stress transferred by the vehicle wheels to the surface of said plates, wherein: - there are provided at least three pairs of aligned plates, mutually dimensioned and spaced apart so as to prevent the wheels of a single axis from simultaneously resting on two pairs of plates and the wheels of multiple axes from simultaneously resting on a same pair of plates; a checking unit is furthermore provided which detects the development over time of said horizontal (Fh(i)) and vertical (Fv(i)) components of the stress and determines when the wheels of an axis get on and off a single plate (Pn) based on the measurement peaks of said vertical component (Fv(i)) of the stress; - said checking unit has data processing means apt to integrate over time the measurements of said horizontal component (Fh(i)> of the stress on a first plate (Pn) and on the subsequent one (Pn+1) when it is detected, within a measurement time range of the braking action (tw1 - tw2) that said vertical component (Fv(i)) of the stress on said first plate (Pn) undergoes a significant reduction and said vertical component (Fv(i)) of the stress on said subsequent platform (Pn+1) undergoes a significant increase.

A plate brake tester for testing the brakes of a motor vehicle, comprises two pair of tread plates (2,3) one beside the other, each of said tread plates having a measuring device (2',3') for measuring the force exerted on the tread plate, a processing unit (4) for processing measuring signals provided by the measuring devices and a display (5) for displaying the measuring results. The plate brake tester comprises a weighing device (12) for determining the weight of the front axle and the rear axle of the vehicle, respectively. The processing unit is adapted to compute the braking retardation from the measured brake forces and the total weight of the vehicle. The plate brake tester computes the brake force ratio front axle/rear axle from the measured brake forces and the dynamic weight ratio front axle/rear axle from the computed braking retardation, the wheelbase of the vehicle, the height of the centre of gravity of the vehicle and the measured weight of the front axle and the rear axle, respectively. Further, the processing unit provides an indication through the display if said brake force ratio deviates from said dynamic weight ratio and this deviation exceeds predetermined threshold values.
