摘要:
An apparatus and method for improving aerosol particle characterization and detection accuracy in clean room applications that includes an optical particle sizer that receives a particle containing aerosol sample at a higher flow rate which is operatively coupled to an inertial aerosol concentrator for concentrating particles received from the optical particle sizer and delivering a lower flow rate, particle enriched output. The system further includes an optical sensor for sensing of intrinsic particle fluorescence of the lower, particle-enriched flow, since intrinsic fluorescence is a useful indicator of biological particles and biological particle viability, including bacterial particles. The system as a whole provides a measure derived from a single inlet flow both of total particles and of viable microbial particles based on their spectroscopic properties.

A cyclonic separator (100) and methods of cyclonic separation which provide for a band pass separation of particles. That is, a cyclonic separator able to remove particles from an air stream that are greater than a predetermined minimum (which is greater than zero) while being smaller than a particular maximum. This band pass separation may be performed with the inclusion of a secondary vortex break (111) on a cyclonic separator. Also discussed are cyclonic flow systems which provide for less deposition of aerosolized particles onto the cyclonic flow generator and related structures to improve likelihood of particles of interest being provided to an attached detector.

An apparatus (100) for collecting biological aerosols from an air sample is provided comprising an air intake assembly (104) that draws the air sample into the apparatus; a separation section (106) coupled to the intake assembly that separates aerosol particles from the air sample; a capture section (108) coupled to the separation section that transports the aerosol particles in a stream of liquid; and a hydrophobic membrane (134) disposed between the separation section and the capture section and that establishes a controllable air/fluid boundary. Further embodiments comprise an air intake assembly (104) that draws the air sample into the apparatus; a separation section (106) coupled to the intake assembly that separates the aerosol particles from the air sample; a capture section (108) coupled to the separation section that transports the aerosol particles in a stream of liquid; and a corona charging section (500) disposed between the separation section and the capture section that focuses the aerosol particles into the stream of liquid.
摘要:
A cyclone separator, for the separation of particulate materials from a particle-bearing gas or vapour, in which the particle-bearing gas or vapour is injected into a separating chamber (10), and the particles centrifuged to a separating chamber wall (12) of the separating chamber (10) for collection, the separating chamber wall (12) being wetted by a liquid to assist in collection of the centrifuged particles from the separating chamber wall (12), the separating chamber wall (12) being at least partly porous, the separating chamber wall (12) being wetted by the passage of the liquid through the porous part, to provide a more uniform wetting of the separating chamber wall (12), and hence more efficient particulate collection than previously achieved by prior art methods. The cyclone separator of the invention may also be used for the separation and collection of gas or vapour-borne vapours, in place of particulates. An instrument for the separation, collection and detection and/or analysis of gas or vapour-borne materials using a cyclone separator in accordance with the invention is described.

A gas-liquid interface apparatus is provided adapted for collecting a flow of gas entraining a particulate and/or aerosol material and mixing it with a flow of liquid characterised in that it comprises a chamber, a flow path for passage of the liquid between inlet and outlet orifices in a lower part of the chamber volume; a pump for supplying the liquid to the inlet orifice, a liquid level sensor oriented such as to sense the presence of liquid at set height above the inlet and/or outlet orifice; an inlet for supplying the flow of gas into the chamber in an orientation such that it deposits particulates and/or aerosol therein into liquid flowing between the liquid inlet and outlet orifices, and and outlet for removing air from the chamber after it has deposited the particulates and/or aerosol upon that liquid; wherein the sensor is adapted to control the pump such as to increase the rate of supply of liquid to the inlet orifice when the the liquid level falls below the set level and reduce the rate of supply of liquid when
