A heating element is used for heating the resonant sensor element and it is controlled during a sensing cycle, with the change in mass of the deposited particles monitored during heating. This enables a low cost device to be able to detect particle concentration as well as provide information about the chemical and/or physical nature of the particles.

A method for comparing odors comprises: sampling odor sources and detecting primary odorants, then for each odor source, storing each of the sampled odor sources in respective primary vectors of odor descriptors that describe the primary odorants. For each source a source vector is then constructed by summing the primary vectors of the respectively detected primary odorants. Comparison between the odors is achieved by determining an angle between the source vectors, which may then be output. The method may be used in electronic noses and like equipment.

The invention relates to a system and a method, whereby laboratory measurements can be used for determining dynamic changes in the properties of a coating material and/or a material (2) to be coated, as a liquid-containing coating material is applied onto the material (2) to be coated. The essential quantities in terms of drying technology can be calculated by means of measuring results obtained through the invention and by means of per se known algorithms by using optimization. This optimization can be performed by means of a computer program product built for this purpose. Obtained results are used for controlling an industrial drying process.
