A method and a device for determination of abrasive forces, wherein at least two distinguishable layers, which are removable by scraping, are applied on a substrate one on top of the other and so as to cover one another. In addition, each layer is associated with a predetermined abrasive force required to penetrate and remove the layer by scraping, and this strength is smaller the closer to the surface that the layer is positioned. When the layers are subjected to abrasive forces, parts of the applied layers are scraped off, starting from the outermost layer and further downwards into the underlying layers, and thus one of the layers is laid bare (exposed) at each point, which indicates the abrasive force at that point. The thus exposed surface of each layer may then be identified. The method and the device are particularly suitable in car-crash testing in order to assess the abrasive forces arising from e.g. airbags.

Force is applied to the piston by means of a spring (16) and a second piston (15) advanced by means of a trigger assembly (18). Scales associated with the first and second pistons measure the depth of penetration of the probe and the force required for penetration respectively. The measurements may be used alone or in conjunction in determining tenderness.

A system is provided for predicting when the failure of a rotating machine tool or part is imminent or when a tool is worn. The system includes a transducer for producing an output related to the workpiece vibrations caused by the machine tool and an analog comparator which compares this output with a threshold signal related to the normal operation of the tool and established by a microcomputer which determines whether further signals which exceed the threshold are produced during each of a predetermined number of subsequent time intervals related to the rotational speed of the tool. If so, a "failure" signal is produced which may be used, for example, to cause retraction of the tool.
