An apparatus for inspecting objects utilizes a fan beam or flood beam to illuminate the inspected region of the object. A modulator, which may take the form of a movable mask, dynamically encodes the beam so that each segment of the inspected region receives varying amounts of radiation according to a predetermined temporal sequence. The resultant signal produced by a backscatter detector or optional transmission detector receiving radiation from the object is decoded to recover spatial information so that an image of the inspected region may be constructed.

The inventive X-ray analyzing system shows improved resolution and signal to noise ration.

The scanning illuminating device comprises: an emission centre from which radiation is emitted in an illuminating sector 2, a cylindrical ring 3 (or a simple portion of such a ring) centred on the source and rotatably movable about a first axis 4, this ring comprising a plurality of slits 5 that are regularly distributed about its axis of rotation and that have the same angular amplitude α; a cylinder portion 7 centred on the source and rotatably movable about a second axis 8 crossing the first axis at said centre and forming a nonzero angle therewith, this cylinder portion comprising a slit 9 having an angular amplitude β; a first device 2 for stepwise control of the rotation of the ring, defining an elementary angular step αα such that there is an integer N1 other than 1 meeting the condition α=N1.αα; and a device 13 for stepwise control of the rotation of the ring portion defining an angular step ββ such that there is an integer N2 other than 1 meeting the condition β=N2.ββ.
