This invention relates to a method of non-contact detection and identification of the type of different substances and mixtures as well as determining their characteristics as concentration, hardness, etc. The method comprises irradiation of the inspected object by a wave pulse or a series of such pulses; reception (1), amplification (2) and analogue-to-digital conversion (3) of the signal, formation of output detailing wavelet coefficients and output approximating wavelet coefficients by means of fast discrete wavelet transformation of the digitized signal, by means of Mallat's pyramidal algorithm and orthogonal base functions, filtering (7) of the output approximating and detailing wavelet coefficients up to preselected ones, comparison of the filtered approximating and/or detailing wavelet coefficients, in the capacity of recognition attributes with preselected respective reference coefficients by the classifying device (8), and according to the comparison result the presence and type is determined and/or the studied characteristics of the inspected object is determined.

An apparatus (10) and method for down hole gas separation (18) from the multiphase fluid (16) flowing in a wellbore or a pipe, for determining the quantities of the individual components of the liquid and the flow rate of the liquid, and for remixing the component parts of the fluid after which the gas volume may be measured, without affecting the flow stream, are described. Acoustic radiation force is employed to separate gas from the liquid, thereby permitting measurements to be separately made for these two components; the liquid (oil/water) composition is determined from ultrasonic resonances (32); and the gas volume is determined from capacitance measurements (44). Since the fluid flows around and through the component parts of the apparatus, there is little pressure difference, and no protection is required from high pressure differentials.

The food material is in a liquid or a semi-solid state and/or contained within a container body (16), such as a pipe. In a second aspect, the invention relates to an apparatus (10) for determining the texture of food material, wherein the apparatus comprises a device (12) for generating a vibrational impact, such as a piezo actuator, a device (14) for measuring vibrations, such as a vibrometer, a holding mechanism, comprising a container body (16) for containing the food material therein or a string to attach the food material thereto, and an analyser for comparing measured vibrations with at least one reference value, determined prior to the measurement.

An apparatus and a method for measuring a speed of sound in a fluid in a well bore may include a frame adapted to receive the fluid there through are provided. The apparatus includes an acoustic source mounted on the frame; an acoustic detector to measure a signal propagating through the fluid, the acoustic detector disposed proximate the frame at a known distance from the acoustic source; and a test circuit adapted to synchronize the acoustic detector with a signal propagating through the frame. A method to determine physical properties of a fluid in a geological formation including a shear wave anisotropy in the geological formation and the formation composition using the fluid density and the fluid speed of sound is also provided.
