The disclosed method provides real-time information of a refinery feedstock such that, for example, a trader negotiating the sale of the product has accurate assay information on which to determine whether to sell or purchase the product.

Disclosed is a method for determining the boiling point of a liquid medium, particularly brake fluid, hydraulic oil or a liquid in pressure transmission devices, wherein the liquid medium is locally heated on a surface area (14) or a sensor element (10) up to the boiling point thereof and the temperature of the surface area (14) is detected. A regulating, substantially constant temperature of the surface area (14) as heat increases is detected as the boiling temperature for the liquid medium.

The device includes a probe (3) for immersion in fluid to be tested, in particular in a fluid reservoir, and the probe (3) comprises an inner casing (11) defining a housing (11A) for a semi-encapsulated portion of fluid and an outer sheath (7) defining a shroud surrounding the inner casing (11). A heater (5) and a temperature sensor (6) are present in the housing (11A), and apertures (10, 13) are provided to permit fluid flows to and from the housing (11A). The device senses the onset of the equilibrium reflux boiling temperature of the fluid in the housing (11A).

A device for determining the nature of a hydraulic fluid, in particular the boiling point of a brake fluid, consists essentially of an electrically heated sensor element (13) which is immersed in the test fluid, a current source (12) which supplies a current of constant amplitude, and a measuring device (15) for measuring the voltage drop across the sensor element (13). The sensor element is designed and the heating current chosen so that after the sensor element is heated a stable cellular convection is established for the duration of the measurement. The voltage drop measured at the sensor element (13) is evaluated as a measure of the nature of the fluid. The sensor element is a linear conductor (13', 20, 21) clamped at both ends. The sensor element may also consist of several linear conductors (13', 20, 21) of this type connected in parallel or in series.

A process and device for determining the boiling temperature of a fluid, for example a hygroscopic brake fluid. A probe (1,1') is partly immersed in the fluid to be examined, until it reaches a precisely defined depth. The probe (1,1') contains a measurement cell (14) in which a temperature measuring element (17) is arranged and which communicates with the fluid to be examined through an inlet hole (13). The upper part of the measurement cell (14) forms a condensation zone (15) which communicates with its surroundings through outlets (16). When the fluid to be examined boils, a bubbling or foaming ebullition zone (22) is formed immediately above the surface (21) of the fluid in the measurement cell (14), topped by a condensation zone (15) from which the condensate flows out. The temperature in the bubbling ebullition zone is measured by the temperature measuring element (17).

Wenn die Bremsflüssigkeit zu sieden beginnt, bilden sich im Bereich des Heizelements, das gleichzeitig Temperaturfühler ist, Dampfblasen, wodurch sich die Wärmeleitfähigkeit ändert. Diese Änderung der zeitlichen Temperaturänderung dv/dt wird von der Auswertelektronik (5) festgestellt, die Temperatur festgehalten und zur Bestimmung des Siedepunktes der Bremsflüssigkeit verwendet.
