Signals are received, over a range of angles, at an input a device. The signals include a primary signal with a principal direction of arrival and an interfering signal with a respective interfering direction of arrival at the input. A plurality of measurements are determined for the received signals over the range of angles. Each measurement relates to a particular angle and indicating the energy of the received signals which are received from the particular angle. For each angle over the range of angles, a value is removed from the measurement for that angle, the value being based on the minimum of: (i) the energy of the measurement for that angle, and (ii) the energy of a corresponding measurement for a corresponding angle mirrored around the principal direction of arrival, whereby the remaining values of the plurality of measurements are indicative of said at least one interfering direction of arrival.

Mv bearing channels are then formed (102) for each Doppler channel with each sub-array and, subsequently, two adaptive right/left channels are formed (104) using said sub-arrays. Bei einem Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Tiefe von getauchten Schallquellen unter Verwendung einer unter Wasser geschleppten akustischen Antenne zur Schallquellenortung, die eine Vielzahl von beabstandet aufgereihten Hydrophonen aufweist, wird aus den elektrischen Ausgangssignalen der Hydrophone mittels Beamforming eine Richtcharakteristik der Antenne mit einer Hauptkeule maximaler Empfangsempfindlichkeit (Beam 25) gebildet, der Beam (25) in Vertikalrichtung geschwenkt und die Intensität des Beamformer-Ausgangssignal in Zuordnung zur jeweiligen Beamschwenklage gemessen. Aus der dem Intensitätsmaximum zugehörigen Schwenklage des Beams (25), der Tauchtiefe der akustischen Antenne (10) und der Entfernung zur Schallquelle wird die Tauchtiefe der Schallquelle errechnet.

The present invention is a system and technique for reducing the effective beam width of a receive beam for a sensing system, for example a sonar or radar system. The sensing system includes a plurality of physical sensors (26) each for measuring a receive signal wherein each receive signal includes a first and second data processing unit. The sensing system (10) may include means for computing sensor data (12) for at least one extrapolated-sensor, including first extrapolation means for computing a first extrapolated-sensor data unit of the at least one extrapolated-sensor by extrapolation of a first data processing unit of the plurality of physical sensors, and second extrapolation means for computing a second extrapolated-sensor data unit of the at least one extrapolated-sensor by extrapolation of a second data processing unit of the plurality of physical sensors. A small-size microphone array is constructed by accommodating the plurality of movable arms (8) inside of the flame (2) in a radiating state as shown in FIG. 8(A) . On the other hand, a large-size microphone array is constructed by radially developing the plurality of movable arms (8) outside of the flame (2) as shown in FIG. 8(B) . When constructing a circular two-dimensional microphone array, a size of the circular two-dimensional microphone array can be easily changed in this manner. Hence, the sound localization can be handled over a wide frequency range.
