A method and apparatus for estimating a flow rate of a phase of a multiphase fluid is disclosed. A first velocity distribution is obtained for a first set of nuclei in the fluid from a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) signal received for the fluid in response to a first NMR excitation signal. A second velocity distribution is obtained for a second set of nuclei in the fluid from an NMR signal received for the fluid in response to a second NMR excitation signal. A velocity of the phase is estimated from the first velocity distribution and the second velocity distribution. The flow rate of the phase is estimated using the estimated velocity of the phase and an estimated volume fraction of the phase.

A method of obtaining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data from a subterranean formation may include operating a tool in a subterranean formation for generating both NMR data and NMR scaled data based upon NMR measurements of the subterranean formation. The method may also include operating the tool for encoding and transmitting both the NMR data and NMR scaled data, and receiving and decoding, above the subterranean formation, both the NMR data and NMR scaled data from the tool. The method may also include performing error-correction of the received and decoded NMR data based upon the received and decoded NMR scaled data.

A multicoil NMR data acquisition apparatus and processing method for performing three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging in a static magnetic field without the application of controlled static magnetic field gradients. A preferred application relates specifically to the detection and localization of groundwater using the Earth's magnetic field. Multicoil arrays are used in both transmit and receive modes, and coherent data processing algorithms applied to the data to generate three-dimensional NMR spin density estimates. Disclosed are methods for acquiring NMR data using an array of at least two transmit and receive coils, and for processing such multicoil data to estimate the three-dimensional NMR spin density distributions.

In combination with an NMR sensor or other sensors, a complete set of flow fraction, flow velocity, and flow rate measurements can be obtained for multiphase fluids containing gas, oil, water or any combination thereof.

A sample acquired during hydrocarbon exploration or production, and comprising at least one of water, hydrocarbons or solids, is sensed by performing continuous wave nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the amount of a relevant type of nucleus from which a measure of the composition of the sample is derived. During a scan through resonance of the one or more types of nuclei, there is detected an absorption measurement of the absorbed energy of the electromagnetic field, that may be an integrated measure of instantaneous absorption. Hydrogen nuclei may be measured to derive a measure of the amount of water in the sample. Chlorine nuclei and/or sodium nuclei may be measured to derive a measure of the salinity of the sample.
