A combiner is configured to reflect the generated image in a field of view of the occupant to create a virtual image. The combiner has variable light transmission and/or reflection capability. A light sensor assembly is electrically coupled to the combiner, which includes a light sensor configured to measure brightness, preferably as viewed behind the virtual image. A controller is configured to interpret the brightness measured by the light sensor and adjust the amount of light transmitted through the combiner based on the brightness.

A heads up display (HUD (12)) system that includes a light source (14) configured to project an image (20), and a diffractive combiner (16). The diffractive combiner (16) includes one or more reflective volume phase gratings (RVPG (26)), each configured to reflect light from the light source (14) having a distinct wavelength toward a HUD viewer (22). Each RVPG (26) is also embossed with a pattern configured to diffract light at the distinct wavelength so the HUD viewer (22) can see an image (20) in a field of view (24) that passes through the diffractive combiner (16). By forming a diffractive combiner (16) with an RVPG (26) embossed with a particular pattern, the occurrence of rainbow artifacts on the surface of the diffractive combiner (16) caused by random sources of light is reduced.

An imaging light guide for conveying a virtual image has a waveguide with first and second color channels for directing light of a first and second wavelength range toward a viewer eyebox. Each color channel has an in-coupling diffractive optic to diffract an image-bearing light beam into the waveguide and a reflector array having a partially reflective surface and a dichroic filter surface in parallel. Reflector array surfaces expand the respective light beam of the channel from the in-coupling diffractive optic in a first dimension and direct the expanded light beams toward an out-coupling diffractive optic. The dichroic surface reflects light of the color channel toward the reflective surface and transmits other light out of the waveguide. The out-coupling diffractive optic expands the image-bearing light beam orthogonally to the first dimension and directs the further expanded light beam toward the viewer eyebox.
