Methods for communicatively coupling components at down-hole locations within a wellbore include introducing first and second cables through which signals are transmissible into the wellbore. Terminal ends of the cables are coarsely aligned by coupling connector housings associated with the cables within the wellbore. The terminal ends are then finely aligned by activating motors to move at least one of the terminal ends within the connector housings until a signal of sufficient strength is transmissible between the first and second cables.

Embodiments of the present invention relate to the field of communications, and provide a fiber patch cord apparatus, a port panel, and a fiber patch cord system, which can simplify a structure of the fiber patch cord system. The fiber patch cord apparatus includes: a crawling unit, configured to move to a corresponding position of a source adapter port along a crawling guide rail provided by a port panel; a clamping unit, configured to clamp a fiber patch cord on the source adapter port; and a pulling and insertion unit, configured to pull the fiber patch cord out of the source adapter port, where the pulling and insertion unit is further configured to insert the fiber patch cord into a target adapter port. The port panel includes mold strip groups and guide posts. The fiber patch cord system includes a fiber distribution terminal, the fiber patch cord apparatus, a port panel, and a controller that is configured to control the fiber patch cord apparatus to move on a crawling guide rail, where the controller is further configured to control a mold strip group on the port panel to move. The embodiments of the present invention are used to pull and insert a fiber patch cord.

A method and apparatus are provided for detecting both an absence and a presence of a light beam moving in an optical fiber to determine the position of a component. The method is carried out by the apparatus which includes a plunger having first and second positions coordinated with first and second component positions respectively. The optical fiber is capable of having a light beam move in a first direction and of having the light beam move in a reverse direction in the optical fiber. A detector is provided for indicating the absence of the reverse direction of the light beam moving in the optical fiber and for indicating the presence of the light beam moving in the first direction in the optical fiber.

Optical actuators (16) are provided in forms such as: an optical cavity (3) that absorbs light to cause displacement of the actuator, an optical actuator micro-mirror (34) that uses light momentum to cause rotation of the mirror (34), and a bistable shell actuator that changes shape in response to the impingement of light thereon. Optical actuators may be thermally compensated and may be attached to lever systems to multiply their effective displacements.

By displacing the liquids inside the channels using suitable actuators, light is selectively guided through the liquid. By selecting an appropriate refractive index, the light beams are deviated according to a particular angle. By means of such a miniaturised component, the light beams can be directed at high frequency. In a base light conducting body (5), suitable void spaces (54) are connected to channels, and in the channels is placed a liquid whereof the refractive index corresponds substantially to that of the base body. The liquid is displaced in the channels by means of piezoelectric actuators arranged in the void spaces. Thus, the light passing through the base body is selectively deviated in two different directions and an optical switch is obtained.

The optical connector plug (1) according to the present invention can be applied to APC optical connector plug, secure high reliability for optical cross-connecting, and also reduce cost.
