Abstract: An integrated optical assembly includes an optics mount. The optics mount has disposed thereon a light source for providing a beam of light and a lens configured to focus the beam of light. The integrated optical assembly includes a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) mechanically coupled to the optics mount. The PIC has disposed thereon a grating coupler for receiving the beam of light and coupling the beam of light into a waveguide. The integrated optical assembly includes a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) mirror configured to receive the beam of light from the lens and redirect it towards the grating coupler. A position of a reflective portion of the MEMS mirror is adjustable to affect an angle of incidence of the beam of light on the grating coupler.

Abstract: Embodiments describe high-efficiency optical waveguide transitions - i.e., creating heterogeneous transitions between Si and III-V semiconductor regions or devices with minimal reflections. This is advantageous for III-V device performance, e.g. for an on-chip lasers achieving lower relative intensity noise (RIN) and lower phase noise by avoiding reflections, higher gain and reduced gain-ripple from an semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) by avoiding internal reflections in the SOA. Furthermore, in some embodiments, generated photocurrent can be used as a monitor signal for control purposes, thereby avoiding the use of separate tap-monitor photodetectors, which provide additional link loss.

Abstract: An optical sub-assembly cartridge for use in a multi-channel receiver optical sub-assembly (ROSA) is disclosed and includes pre-aligned demultiplexing optics. The optical sub-assembly cartridge may include a plurality of sidewalls which define a cartridge body and at least partially enclose a cavity therein. A sidewall of the cartridge body may include a sidewall opening configured to allow light to enter the cavity. A first optical filter disposed opposite the sidewall opening may receive light entering the cavity and be configured to pass unassociated channel wavelengths out of the cavity while reflecting associated channel wavelengths to a mirror disposed in the cavity. The mirror may then reflect the received channel wavelengths to a second optical filter within or external to the cavity. The second optical filter may emit a narrow spectrum of channel wavelengths to a photodiode package to convert the same to a proportional electrical signal.
