The user may thereby support the housing by engaging the grip portions of the housing. The device further includes input keys (24) positioned on each of the first and second generally concave portions of the rear surface such that the user may actuate the input keys with fingers of each hand while engaging the grip portions, and such that the generally concave portions facilitate ergonomic access to the input keys.

Current input methods for Western European portable input electronic apparatuses accommodate only phonemes of Western European languages; however, they do not accommodate the phoneme structures of the same. In the present invention, by performing setting so that, for a number of keys , one key is assigned input for a plurality of alphabet letters in a form which accommodates the entirety of phoneme structures of Western European languages, for across all Western European languages. It is then possible to input the same content as with a current personal computer in methods which use a 3 row, 3 column keyboard and switch keyboards manually, with approximately a 30% increase keystrokes, and in methods which use a 3 row, 5 column keyboard and do not switch keyboards, with approximately a 10% increase in keystrokes. In methods which use a 3 row, 3 column keyboard and determine a input result in accordance with a dictionary, it is possible to input the same content with approximately a 25% increase in keystrokes, and in the case of a similar 3 row, 5 column keyboard, with a similar number of keystrokes as with a current personal computer.

The input method includes: providing an input interface on a touch display screen, where the input interface includes a virtual soft keyboard distributed in a sector area around a lower left corner or lower right corner of the input interface; receiving an input instruction which is input by a user through the virtual soft keyboard; and displaying input information corresponding to the input instruction. An input apparatus and a terminal device are also provided by embodiments of the present invention. The present invention is applicable to a mobile device or a handheld device.

Keypads are described which are row similar to a standard telephone keypad though they have a different number of columns of base-letter-assigned keys than the standard to which they are related. Smooth sequences of such row-similar keypads are exhibited. Keypads which support both row-similar telephone keypad layouts and reduced layouts corresponding to typewriter standards are disclosed. It is shown how to combine various structural and statistical limitations with row similarity. It is also shown how to embed a row-similar digit layout in row-similar base letter layouts, and how to beneficially provide negative space between keys, construct pseudo standards, and extend or reduce desktop standards or pseudo standards while obeying structural or typability constraints.
