The method and apparatus of the present invention convert raw figure data into a reduced data set which defines a two dimensional arbitrary shape, herein referred to as a curve series, whose edges are defined by second order parametric curves (24) such that the edges of the curve series closely approximate those of the figure represented by the raw data. The curve series data is converted for presentation on a display medium (30) of an image which closely approximates that of the figure.

An improved system for driving a gas discharge display which prevents streamers of ionized gas from forming between adjacent character positions. Each of a plurality of character positions has an anode driver to which anode drive signals are sequentially applied. All odd character positions share a first cathode decoder, driver and all even character positions share a second cathode decoder-driver. Cathode drive signals are simultaneously applied to the first and second decoder driver circuits. A first logic device, responsive to all odd position anode drive signals, outputs a blanking signal which is applied to the blanking input of the even character cathode decoder driver to bias all even character cathodes into a non-conductor state whenever an anode drive signal is applied to an odd character anode. A second logic device, responsive to all even position anode drive signals. outputs a blanking signal which is applied to the blanking input of the odd character cathode decoder driver to bias all odd character cathoaes into a non-conducting state whenever an anode drive signal is applied to an even character anode. Thus, when a particular character position is scanned by the anode drive signals and the selected cathode segments thereof are energized. the cathodes of adjacent character positions are biased into a non-conducting state making it impossible for streamers of ionized gas to form between the energized character and its neighbors.

A driver IC packaging module is provided which comprises a driver IC chip 10 for driving a display electrode 5a of the flat display panel 5, a substrate 11 on which the driver IC chip 10 is mounted, and a flexible substrate 12 having output wirings. On one end of the flexible substrate connection terminals are provided and on the other end output terminals are provided, so as to connect electrically at least the display electrode 5a and output pads of the driver IC chip 10. The packaging module has a structure in which the output pads of the driver IC chip 10 and the connection terminals of the flexible substrate 12 are connected directly, and the direction of exposed surfaces of the output terminals of the flexible substrate 12 connected to the display electrode 5a and the direction of the driver IC chip 10 mounting surface on the substrate 11 are directed oppositely. When such a driver IC packaging module is applied to a flat display device, a high heat radiation efficiency can be achieved.

Les enroulements secondaires du transformateur debitent en continu une impulsion a haute tension en phase avec un des organes de commutation. Lors de la generation de signaux de commande appropries permettant le fonctionnement des organes de commutation, une tension de grandeur suffisante est appliquee aux segments de cellules selectionnees dans le dispositif d'affichage pour declencher les cellules. Le transformateur ainsi que les impulsions de basse tension sont commandes par une horloge a haute frequence de maniere a permettre un fonctionnement a haute intensite de l'affichage.
