A data storage device comprises: a data member comprising means for storing data on a surface thereof; and a data retrieval member. The data retrieval member comprises: a plurality of heads for reading data from the data member; and a plurality of storage buffers each arranged to store data read from one of more of said heads. The retrieval member is arranged so as to output the contents of a plurality of said storage buffers sequentially. This allows fast and efficient reading of the data stored. Also disclosed is a telecommunications switch which may employ such a storage device. The switch dynamically assigns data packets to nodes as an output path becomes available to minimise queuing delays.

The present invention provides a tape head (30) with reduced pole-tip recession. A recessed substrate (37) and a closure (32) of the tape head are separated by a plurality of layers, which include, for example, a bottom layer (35), a recessed bottom pole (86), a write gap (88), a shared pole (84), a read gap (60), a top pole (82) and a top layer (48). The recessed bottom pole is positioned in the recess of the substrate. By utilizing the recessed substrate and the recessed bottom pole, the thickness of the overcoat layer is reduced, thereby reducing the distance between the substrate and the closure at an air-bearing surface of the recording head. With the present invention, wear is reduced, thereby reducing pole tip recession.

A multi-channel magnetic head is also disclosed which includes a plurality of magnetic heads having different azimuth angles of the magnetic gaps, wherein each magnetic head is formed by abutting a pair of magnetic core halves to each other, each of the magnetic core halves having a magnetic metal film formed in the vicinity of at least a substrate surface facing a magnetic recording medium, for defining a magnetic gap between the magnetic metal films, and wherein a recess for forming a coil is formed in the abutting surface of at least one of the magnetic core halves, and the coil is formed in the recess by thin film forming technique. The methods for producing the magnetic head and the multi-channel magnetic head are also disclosed.

Disclosed is a image information recording apparatus wherein a pulse corresponding to rotation of a magnetic disk (1) is obtained by detecting a PG-yoke signal as a rotational position detection index in the disk (1) by a PG-coil (5) as a pulse detection means. The recording/reproduction control is performed by a control circuit (17) as erase recording/reproduction control means operating in accordance with the pulse. The erase and recording/reproduction operations of data are performed with respect to the disk (1) by a composite magnetic head (6) controlled by the erase recording/reproduction control means, said control means providing change-over timing signals enabling successively repeating erasing and recording operations in synchronism with PG-pulses on a single recording track of the magnetic disk.

A process is also disclosed for producing such magnetic heads wherein the pair of magnetic cores are positioned close to each other, and the gaps G1 and G2 are accurately positioned on the same plane.
