An improved media player and a method for operating a portable computing device (e.g., media player) are disclosed. According to one aspect, a portable computing device is able to protect its disk drive when being subjected to undesired levels of acceleration. The portable computing device protects its disk drive by monitoring for such accelerations and operating to avoid usage of the disk drive during periods of acceleration. Through such protection, the likelihood of damage to the disk drive or loss of data stored on the disk drive is able to be substantially reduced. According to another aspect, a user of a portable computing device can be alerted when the portable computing device is being subjected to undesirable levels of acceleration.

A frequency estimation block (24) for estimating the external vibration frequency from a signal that is based on the position error according to the adaptive rule, and a correction table(25) for sequentially correcting the constants of a compensator (23) using this external vibration frequency, are provided. Since the constantssupplied to the compensator (23) are sequentially corrected according to the estimated angular frequency, highly accurate follow up control to an external vibration frequency in a wide range becomes possible.

The method for controlling a disc drive using a counter-electromotive force comprises (a) detecting a voltage applied to a voice coil during a predetermined mode, (b) performing an operation of the value of the counter-electromotive force using the voice coil voltage detected in (a), (c) comparing the value of the counter-electromotive force operated in (b) with a predetermined threshold, and (d) when the value of the counter-electromotive force is equal to or larger than the predetermined threshold, controlling a voice coil motor and a spindle motor so that a current mode is stopped and a parking or unloading mode is executed.
