This invention provides method and apparatus for controlling reproduction speed of an optical disk, which detects the magnitude of a disk vibration after initial operation of an optical disk and adjusts the disk rotation speed based upon the vibration magnitude. The method according to this invention comprises the steps of rotating an installed optical disk; detecting the quantity of signal derived from tracking error signals which are combined from signals reproduced from.the optical disk when the rotation speed reaches to a predetermined speed; and deciding whether to increase the rotation speed above the predetermined speed based upon the detected quantity of the signal. This invention is able to reproduce an optical disk at the possible maximum speed within allowable speed limit through detecting accurate disk vibration magnitude at the initial operation stage and adjusting the reproduction speed to higher speed.

Further, a light-shielding area (8i) for shielding a part of the reflected light between the division lines (9b and 9c). The signals are operated to reduce offset of the tracking error signal due to shift of object lens and tilt of the optical disk. Then, the optical head has small offset of tracking error signal with a simple structure as prior art optical head of push-pull technique.

An optical pick-up device according to the present invention is adapted to reproduce an information signal recorded on a multi-layer optical disc having a plurality of information signal storage layers on which the desired information signal is stored. The optical pick-up device includes a light source for emitting a light beam, an optical means for dividing the light beam emitted from the light source into three separate beams composed of a main beam and first and second side beams and radiating these beams onto the multi-layer optical disc, a main beam-receiving member for receiving the main beam reflected from the multi-layer optical disc, first and second side beam-receiving members for receiving the first and second side beams reflected from the multi-layer optical disc, respectively, and a means for outputting a detection signal indicative of a quantity of light in response to the light quantity received by the main beam-receiving member, the first side beam-receiving member and the second side beam-receiving member. The first side beam-receiving member and the second side beam-receiving member are disposed spaced by a given distance apart from the main beam-receiving member and located at positions where no interference with the main beam reflected from an unfocused information signal storage layer of the multi-layer optical disc, is caused, so that the light beam reflected from the unfocused information signal storage layer of the multi-layer optical disc, does not give any influence on function of the device, and a desired information signal can be accurately reproduced from the intended information signal storage layer on which the information signal is recorded.
