An appliance controller includes a plurality of auxiliary inputs for adjusting parameters of appliance operation such as washing machine operation (e.g. water temperature, rinse options, water level, speeds and/or the like). Each auxiliary input unit acts as a low power potentiometer. The various auxiliary units are connected in series. Each auxiliary unit produces a variable resistance based on position of a control knob of the auxiliary unit. The auxiliary inputs cooperate with each other to produce a unique aggregate resistance signal for the particular arrangement of users knobs of the various auxiliary input units. This unique resistance signal is sent to the processor thereby providing user selection information relating to the various auxiliary input units to the processor. In one form, each auxiliary input unit requires only two wires thereby eliminating a substantial amount of wiring. In one form, a detent plate and associated grooves is provided to simulate tactile feedback experienced when a traditional appliance input knob is rotated.

A cam disc (22) has a dual row of ratchet teeth (50, 52) on the periphery for dual rate of advancement by either of two oscillating motorized advance pawls (42, 54). The disc has alternating high and low concentric cam tracks (68) formed on one face. A plate (32) is registered on the cam disc hub (36) and has integrally formed plural resilient cam follower arms (70, 76) with each arm having a plastic cam track follower tip (72, 74, 78, 80) molded over the tip. The molded tips make contact with a stationary portion of the plate to limit follower travel when the cam is retracted by user movement of the shaft for setting the cam position. The high and low cam tracks engage adjacent follower arm pairs to effect a drop-to-make and drop-to-break action to each of a plurality of SPDT switches (38, 39) disposed for actuation by the cam followers.

The invention relates to a rotary switch as operating device for contactless switching on and off and for automatic control of a number of programme sequences in electrically-operated units, such as washing machines, washing dryers, dishwashers or similar units. In order to simplify the assembly and maintenance thereof said rotary switch (1) comprises mutually communicating ratchet devices and a plate arranged at a separation therefrom with a Hall-effect rotating field sensor. Spring-loaded ball ratchets permit a distinct switching rotation of an operating piece (2) with magnetic devices in ranges up to 360° and angle-dependent parameter values are generated in a conventional manner in the rotational field sensor for the control of various programme sequences.

A programmer/timer for an appliance of the type having a rotatable program cam drum (45) advanced by an oscillating paw (76) engaging a ratchet wheel (48) for actuating at least one appliance function switch. A shaft (16) is provided for enabling user positioning of the cam after limited rotational lost-motion for selecting the program interval. An annular member (34) having a conical cam (40) surface is received over the shaft and is helically cammed to the shaft. During the limited lost-motion rotation of thE shaft, the collar moves axially and the conical cam surface lifts the paw from the ratchet thereafter enabling user rotation of the program cam for positioning same for program interval selection.
