A method for identifying the fault by current differential protection and a device thereof are provided. The method comprises: measuring the full component currents of the two terminals of a two-terminal line system and calculating the corresponding fault component current vectors; obtaining an operate value by calculating a first difference between an absolute value of the sum of the fault component current vectors and Iset1; obtaining a restrain value by multiplying a second difference with a control factor, in which the second difference is calculated between the maximum of the absolute values of the fault component currents and Iset2 or between the absolute value of the difference of said fault component currents and Iset2; and identifying a fault as an external one or internal one by comparing the operate value with the restrain value. The solutions of the present intention achieve better reliability, sensitivity and faster speed than existing products.

There is provided a method for predicting a current transformer saturation, comprising: detecting a first current from a first current transformer at a high voltage side of a transformer and detecting a second current from a second current transformer at a low voltage side of the transformer; calculating a first fundamental vector, a first DC component and a first total RMS of the first current, and calculating a second fundamental vector, a second DC component and a second total RMS of the second current; and generating a prediction signal for the current transformer saturation according to the first fundamental vector, the first DC component, the first total RMS, the second fundamental vector, the second DC component and the second total RMS. The current transformer saturation may be predicted effectively before it triggers a differential protection of the transformer, thus a differential protection mal-operation of the transformer may be avoided.

A differential relay for protecting a power apparatus portion of a power system, such as a bus line, includes incoming and outgoing power lines on which incoming and outgoing currents are present. The incoming and outgoing currents of each phase are applied trhough current transformers and then through filtering and normalizing circuits prior to application to the differential relay. The differential relay includes a circuit for determining the presence of an external fault, and maintains security by avoiding a tripping action of the relay for said external faults. Further, the relay includes circuits which in response to the external fault evolving to an internal fault alters the operation of a portion of the relay, by increasing the gain for the restraint current, enabling a directional element for supervision of the differential relay, and for extending the immediate post-fault value of restraint current, and adding a time delay for a selected period of time, all of which are used to identify an external fault evolving into an internal fault.

Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zum Erzeugen von Auslösesignalen für Schalter bei Kurzschlusströmen an Sammelschienen und/oder Sammelschienenabschnitten. Die Summe zyklisch erfasster Augenblickswerte der Ströme der Zu-und Abgänge der Sammelschiene bzw. der Sammelschienen wird jeweils für mindestens eine Phase gebildet und mit einem Schwellenwert verglichen, dessen Höhe einem unerwünscht grossen Fehlerstrom entspricht. Der Zeitpunkt eines Fehlereintritts wird festgestellt. Bei einer Schwellenüberschreitung unmittelbar nach dem Zeitpunkt des Fehlereintritts wird ein Aus-Kommando für mindestens einen Leistungsschalter erzeugt.

The operating force signal is made active when the scalar quantity of the vector summation of line currents flowing into and out of the bus-bar is larger than a certain value, and the suppressing force signal is made active when the maximum value of scalar quantities of the line currents is larger than the scalar quantity of the vectorially-summed current multiplied by a certain constant. Both signals are supplied to the logical circuit through circuit means having a certain time delay in the restoring operation.

The invention relates to a differential protection method for generating a fault signal (F). According to said method, current measured values (I1 (t), I2 (t)) are measured at least at two different measuring points (40, 50) on a component (80, 410) and are used to form differential current values (I-DIFF) and stabilising values (I-STAB), the fault signal being generated if a tripping range test establishes that a measured value pair, consisting of one of the differential current values and its associated stabilising value, lies within a predefined tripping range (320, 320'). According to the invention, the similarity of the current profiles is tested and a modified trigger range test is carried out depending on the degree of similarity (A), said trigger range test being modified in such a way that the trigger sensitivity for generating the fault signal is reduced as the similarity of the current profiles decreases.
