Embodiments of the present invention provide a signal processing method and apparatus. The method includes: performing M-way filtering on an input signal to obtain M filtered signals, performing extraction on M filtered signals separately to obtain M extracted signals, performing fast Fourier transform FFT on the M extracted signals separately to obtain M frequency-domain signals, and finally determining output signals according to the M frequency-domain signals. According to the embodiments of the present invention, signal filtering and extraction are performed and then FFT is performed. In this way, computation complexity can be reduced.

A system for filtering an image during data compression using a standard JPEG compression/decompression chip typically requires a separate spatial filter external to the chip. The spatial filter is composed of numerous shift registers, flip-flops, multipliers and at least one adder. In contrast, an image filtering system which filters in the frequency domain using the inventive JPEG compression chip modified for filtering in the frequency domain does not require the separate spatial filter and its many components. The modified JPEG chip includes a raster to block converter which converts an image signal into 8x8 blocks, a DCT processor which converts the 8x8 blocks into DCT coefficients, a multiplier which generates filtered DCT coefficients by multiplying predetermined filtering coefficients times the DCT coefficients, a quantizer which generates quantized blocks to a predetermined level stored in a visibility table by quantizing the filtered coefficients, a zigzag scanner which generates a vector having the same number of elements as the quantized blocks, a run-length coder for determining the appropriate run-length according to entropy encoding received from a preloaded Huffman table, and a variable length code packer/unpacker for compressing the entropy encoded vector. A block to raster converter is included to reformat decompressed data.

A video signal encoder uses an encoding system such as that developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). Apparatus according to the present invention filters out high diagonal frequencies in the spatial domain of a video signal. Specifically, two dimensional (2-D) filtering is performed on frames of a video signal to filter out high diagonal spatial frequencies before the video signal is separated into blocks. These blocks may be encoded in fewer bits due to the elimination of image components having high diagonal frequencies.

The matrix based on this transform is decomposed. This means that it is written as a product of permutation matrices and triangular matrices. A permutation matrix is implemented in a permutation circuit and a triangular matrix is implemented in a triangular circuit so that the forward transform is realised by means of a cascade arrangement of permutation circuits and triangular circuits. A multi-dimensional comb filter system for processing e.g. a quadrature modulated color television signal includes an input for receiving the signal; a first comb filter operating at the first period (such as the picture frame rate); and, a second comb filter operating at the second period (such as the picture line rate) connected in tandem with the first comb filter. A delay matching network is connected to the input and provides a delay to the original signal corresponding to the sum of the first period and the second period. A linear adder circuit is connected to the second comb filter ans to the delay matching network for combining in phase the delayed signal passing through the delay matching network and the signal put out by the second comb filter. The adder circuit includes an output for putting out the signal which has been separated by multi-dimensional comb filtering of the original signal without any process adaptivity or switching in response to the content of the original signal.
