A circular stapling instrument (100) includes a casing (110), an anvil assembly (112), a staple driver (156) and a locking mechanism. The anvil assembly (112) is configured to move back and forth between an open position away from the casing (110) and a closed position adjacent the casing. The staple driver (156) is configured to move within the casing from a pre-fired position to a fired position. The locking mechanism is configured to, whenever the anvil assembly (112) is in the open position, automatically lock the staple driver (156) in the pre-fired position preventing the staple driver from being moved to the fired position. The locking mechanism is also configured to, whenever the anvil assembly (112) is in the closed position, automatically unlock the staple driver (156) from the pre-fired position to allow the staple driver to be moved to the fired position.
