The invention relates to a method of managing a digital subscriber line, in particular for identifying the location of weather related faults. The invention continuously measures the signal to noise (SNR) margin on the DSL line as well as measurements from weather related sensors, such as moisture and wind sensors, which each have an associated geographical location. The SNR margin measures are compared to predetermined conditions based on SNR margin characteristics associated with a population of good lines. If the SNR margin measures fail to meet the predetermined conditions, the SNR measures are also compared to the weather sensor measurements over a day or number of days. If there is a correlation between the SNR margin measures and at least one of the sensors, then location of the fault is identified as the location of the sensor having the strongest correlation with the SNR measures.

The present invention relates to a vectoring controller (130) for controlling a vectoring processor (120) that mitigates crosstalk between communication lines (L 1 ..L N ) of a vectoring group. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the vectoring controller is adapted to iterate through successive crosstalk acquisition cycles and, within respective ones of the crosstalk acquisition cycles, to configure sequences of crosstalk probing symbols for transmission over the respective communication lines, to receive sequences of error samples as successively measured by respective receivers (110, 210) coupled to the respective communication lines while the sequences of crosstalk probing symbols are being transmitted, and to determine crosstalk estimates between the respective communication lines based on the sequences of error samples. The vectoring controller is further adapted to randomize the successive sequences of crosstalk probing symbols used during the successive crosstalk acquisition cycles, and to iteratively configure the vectoring processor based on the successive crosstalk estimates. The present invention also relates to a method controlling the vectoring processor.

A computer program product, a computer readable memory medium, a DSL opposite-equipment, a DSL combined tranceiving equipment and a system for eliminating DSL crosstalk are provided, used for accomplishing the method for eliminating DSL crosstalk. The present invention can reduce the time to eliminate the crosstalk to the onlined opposite-equipment generated by the new-onlined opposite-equipment, and greatly increase the speed of the new opposite-equipment for joining into the vector group.

A device for measuring and isolating noise-creating imbalances in a paired telecommunications line has an internal circuit. The internal circuit includes a pulse generator. Pulses provided by the pulse generator are applied to an interface which includes balanced pathways to the conductors. The pulses are applied simplex (longitudinally) to the pair of conductors. Upon encountering a fault in the pair, a reflected metallic voltage signal is received by the interface. The reflected metallic voltage signal is sampled by an analog-to-digital converter. Data relating to the sampled signal is displayed for detection and location of faults on the pair.
