An image position inspecting apparatus includes a reading unit, a generating unit and a specifying unit. The reading unit includes light receiving elements arranged with a reading resolution Rs and reads an inspection image. The generating unit generates a profile based on the read inspection image. The specifying unit acquires a position of the center of gravity of the pixels of the inspection image with respect to the light receiving elements from the profile and specifies a position of each of the pixels of the inspection image based on a phase difference which is a deviation of the acquired position of the center of gravity of the pixels with respect to a light receiving center of the light receiving elements. A resolution of the inspection image is Rp. The reading resolution Rs and the resolution Rp satisfy the following equation. And, m is a positive integer. Rp·((m+1)/2)

Temperature of a printing medium 110 is sufficiently decreased by stopping the printing medium 110 in a discharge path, conveying the printing medium at a low speed, switching a conveyance path, or the like. If the temperature of the printing medium 110 can be sufficiently decreased, the thermochromism phenomenon is suppressed. As a result, it is possible to provide an image forming apparatus capable of achieving highly accurate color matching and color stability.

The number of dots per inch or resolution may be specified within an image on a document or within a postal indicia and later checked to determine if the image or document or the postal indicia has the correct resolution. The foregoing is accomplished by specifying that the image on the substrate (14) will be printed with n plus m dots per inch; rotating an ink jet head (11) having n nozzles per inch about an axis (13) parallel to a substrate by an angle theta so that the ink jet head will produce an image on the substrate having (n/cos theta) dots per inch; storing in a data center that the specified image will be printed with (n/cos theta) dots per inch; analyzing the image to determine if the image has (n/cos theta) dots per inch; and comparing the number of dots per inch in the analyzed image with the number of dots per inch stored for the specified image to determine if they have the same number of dots per inch.

Two methods of calibrating Fax machines are disclosed. The first method utilizes a pre-printed calibration chart and a computer connected to the Fax machine to be calibrated. The calibration chart is fed into the Fax machine which sends the resultant data to the computer. This data is analyzed by the computer to determine when the Fax machine started to scan the calibration chart. If the scan process did not occur at an optimum point, the computer sends a correction value back to the Fax machine to cause the Fax machine to begin scanning subsequent documents at an optimum point. In the second method, a calibration chant is printed by the Fax machine and then fed back into the machine. A copy of the scanned calibration chart is made to determine at what point the Fax machine began scanning the chart. If the Fax machine did not begin scanning at an optimum point, a user reads the copy and manually enters a corrective offset in to the Fax machine such that subsequent documents are scanned properly.

An automatic facsimile signal analyzing system includes a switch unit (4), a service trunk (1), a signal identification trunk (2), a facsimile communication determination unit (3), and a control unit (5). The signal identification trunk restores a facsimile control signal from a modulated and encoded facsimile signal on the set speech path (6) and performs collection of communication state information and detection of a start of facsimile communication on the basis of the restored facsimile control signal. The facsimile communication determination unit permits an operation of the signal identification trunk when the classification result from the service trunk represents a type other than the voice signal and analyzes the communication state information from the signal identification trunk. The control unit performs switching/connection control of the switch unit, connects the service trunk and the signal identification trunk, both of which are in an idle state, to the set speech path upon setting of the speech path, disconnects the service trunk from the speech path when the classification result is output, and disconnects the signal identification trunk from the set speech path when the classification result from the service trunk represents the voice signal and when a call corresponding to the set speech path is ended.

The print quality of printing on a substrate (15) (such as a business form in a moving web configuration) is determined by imaging a small L-shaped border element (16, 31, 33) in an unobtrusive area of the substrate which is indicative of the image quality of the print engine which effects the imaging. Using a high resolution electronic camera (19) and a stroboscopic light (18), electronic data about the border element is fed to a computer (12), which electronically analyzes it for print quality, including measured width, stroke reflectance/background reflectance (which can yield optical density), edge density, edge roughness, solid character fill, and background dusting in non-print areas. The print engine (11) may then be controlled in response to the quality determination. Coded information, and grid (33), may be printed within the area defined by the L-shaped border element, and the information may be obtained by scanning at another location (26).

A digital image processing system comprises a processor (8) at a central, first site; and digital image processing equipment such as an analyse scanner (1) and an expose scanner (2) at a second site remote from the first site. The processor (8) and the digital image processing equipment (1,2) are connectable and are adapted to pass signals therebetween corresponding to signals generated by the digital image processing equipment. These signals may be representative of operator commands or digital data generated at the second site which can be monitored at the first site.
