In a density signal value determination method, a test sheet, on which a plurality of latent image patches and a plurality of background image patches are formed, is outputted. Subsequently, the luminance, the density, and the reflection density of each of the patches are obtained from image data obtained by reading this test sheet. Then, an optimal combination of a latent image patch and a background image patch is selected according to the obtained values. Finally, density signal values used to generate the selected patches are set to generate a latent image and a background image.

Two or more different color definitions are created by combining the selected single color with two or more halftones having anisotropic structure characteristics which are significantly different in orientation to each other while remaining identical in density. By alternatively assigning the color definitions to the image segment in accord with the variable data content, a variable data differential gloss image may be superimposed within an image having reduced data processing and storage requirements.

In a pattern table 19, (1) a permanent dot pattern which is to remain after a document is copied and (2) a temporary dot pattern which is to be erased as the document is copied, are both allocated to each of symbols constituting confidential information and they are classified and managed as hyper-complex matrices. A watermark image is formed based upon anti-copy information used to determine whether the permanent dot pattern or the temporary dot pattern is to be set. Since this allows both the anti-copy information and the confidential information to be embedded together in the document, duplication of the document containing the confidential information embedded therein can be deterred.
