A video signal recording and reproducing apparatus in accordance with the present invention includes A/D converters (1-3), a shuffling circuit (5) and magnetic heads (A1, A2, B1, B2). The A/D converters (1-3) A/D-convert a luminance signal Y and color difference signals P B and P R included in a video signal. The shuffling circuit (5) divides each A/D converted data into first and second channels and further divides the first and second channels into data of a first segment including the color difference signal P R and data of a second segment including the color difference signal P B . The data of the first segments of the first and second channels are recorded on a magnetic tape with a spacing of one track by the magnetic heads (A1 and A2), data of the second segment of the first channel is recorded by the magnetic head (B1) on a portion between the tracks where the first segments are recorded, and data of the second segment of the second channel is recorded on a portion adjacent to the track where the first segment of the second channel is recorded. In a hi-vision VTR, it is possible to prevent an image of improper or poor hues due to differences in characteristics between the channels and enhance a capability of dropout compensation.

An apparatus (MD) for reproducing, by a low-frequency replacement method, a noise-free high definition video (MUSE) signal obtained by band-compressing the high definition video signal in a time-compressed integration Sub-Nyquist encoding system so as to include no aliasing noise in a low-frequency component below 4 MHz. This reproducing apparatus includes a converter (3) for converting a reproduced or received MUSE signal into digital data and a memory (7) for outputting feedback data in which data preceding by two fields and data preceding by four fields with respect to the current field are alternately arranged, a circuit (6) for replacing/non-replacing the data preceding by four fields by first data corresponding to the current field data from the current field data and the feedback data and deriving a data train in which the first data and the data preceding by two fields are alternately arranged. Output from the data train deriving circuit is employed to be converted to composite data by a mixture 11, and a circuit (LC) for replacing the low-frequency component of the current field data or the first data with the low-frequency component of the composite data. The reproducing apparatus further includes a circuit (15, 18, 19; 15) for inhibiting this low-frequency replacement as well as replacement of the data preceding by four fields and the first data upon generation of noise such as dropout in the reproduced MUSE signal.

A digital broadcast receiving apparatus wherein even if a digital broadcast is received and recorded under a bad reception environment, good reproduction and display of the digital broadcast can be achieved with no feeling of unsatisfaction or unpleasantness occurring to the user. In this apparatus, an OFDM demodulating part (3) performs OFDM demodulation and error correction of one-segment broadcast signals to determine whether the reception thereof is normal or abnormal, and then adds TEI in accordance with a determination result to a TS packet. An analyzing part (11) analyzes the TEI to determine whether the recording of the broadcast program is normal or abnormal. A recording apparatus (12) records the TS packet. A main display part (7) displays an image and further displays whether the recording of the broadcast program is normal or abnormal.

A video signal recording and playback apparatus which is compatible with both a conventional television system signal and a wide-screen television system signal, such as PAL and PALplus video signals, has a helper signal demodulator (81) and helper signal remodulation circuit (84), respectively connected to input and output sides of a conventional video tape recorder (82, 83). The demodulator serves to demodulate a modulated helper signal contained in the wide-screen system signal, to obtain a baseband-state helper signal which is recorded and reproduced through a luminance signal processing system of a video tape recorder together with the luminance signal component of the video signal, while the remodulation circuit serves to modulate the playback baseband-state helper signal, to recover a modulated helper signal which can be utilized to compensate the playback video signal to achieve enhanced vertical resolution of a resultant display picture.
